Deformable models in medical image analysis: a survey

In recent years, many shape representations and geometric algorithms have been proposed for matching 3D shapes. Usually, each algorithm is tested on a different (small) database of 3D models, and thus no direct comparison is available for competing methods. We describe the Princeton Shape Benchmark (PSB), a publicly available database of polygonal models collected from the World Wide Web and a suite of tools for comparing shape matching and classification algorithms. One feature of the benchmark is that it provides multiple semantic labels for each 3D model. For instance, it includes one classification of the 3D models based on function, another that considers function and form, and others based on how the object was constructed (e.g., man-made versus natural objects). We find that experiments with these classifications can expose different properties of shape-based retrieval algorithms. For example, out of 12 shape descriptors tested, extended Gaussian images by B. Horn (1984) performed best for distinguishing man-made from natural objects, while they performed among the worst for distinguishing specific object types. Based on experiments with several different shape descriptors, we conclude that no single descriptor is best for all classifications, and thus the main contribution of this paper is to provide a framework to determine the conditions under which each descriptor performs best.

Recent developments in techniques for modeling, digitizing and visualizing 3D shapes has led to an explosion in the number of available 3D models on the Internet and in domain-specific databases. This has led to the development of 3D shape retrieval systems that, given a query object, retrieve similar 3D objects. For visualization, 3D shapes are often represented as a surface, in particular polygonal meshes, for example in VRML format. Often these models contain holes, intersecting polygons, are not manifold, and do not enclose a volume unambiguously. On the contrary, 3D volume models, such as solid models produced by CAD systems, or voxels models, enclose a volume properly. This paper surveys the literature on methods for content based 3D retrieval, taking into account the applicability to surface models as well as to volume models. The methods are evaluated with respect to several requirements of content based 3D shape retrieval, such as: (1) shape representation requirements, (2) properties of dissimilarity measures, (3) efficiency, (4) discrimination abilities, (5) ability to perform partial matching, (6) robustness, and (7) necessity of pose normalization. Finally, the advantages and limitations of the several approaches in content based 3D shape retrieval are discussed.

A survey of content based 3D shape retrieval methods

The American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society jointly created a Task Force on "Outcomes for COPD pharmacological trials: from lung function to biomarkers" to inform the chronic obstructive pulmonary disease research community about the possible use and limitations of current outcomes and markers when evaluating the impact of a pharmacological therapy. Based on their review of the published literature, the following document has been prepared with individual sections that address specific outcomes and markers, and a final section that summarises their recommendations.

3D reconstruction of the bronchial tree in volumetric CT: application to CT bronchography

This chapter introduces the first online MAMS (Multimedia Asset Management System) synergistically developed around MPEG-4/MPEG-7 standards. We show how this combination solves the main challenges for any MAMS with respect to multimedia compression, representation, description as well as user-interactivity. MPEG-4 can be used as a unique solution for storage and presentation of image, audio, video and 2D/3D graphics. Moreover, the basic MPEG-4 components (e.g. the elements of scene graphs) are easily extracted by bitstream parsing and exploited for completing the MPEG-7 content description schema. The solution we provide is open to third party descriptor extractors; with this purpose, a developer API (Application Programming Interface) grants access to decoded media and to the instantiation of the descriptors. The practical validation is achieved by an online MAMS devoted to the indexation of 3D graphics objects corresponding to large and heterogeneous databases.

From MPEG-4 Scene Representation to MPEG-7 Description

3D reconstruction from an incomplete data set is an ill- posed problem. To overcome this drawback, an approach based on constrained optimization is introduced. This approach provides a powerful mathematical framework for selecting a specific solution from the set of feasible solutions; this is done by minimizing some criteria depending on prior densitometric information. We propose a global optimization scheme using a deterministic relaxation algorithm based on Bregman's algorithm associated with half-quadratic minimization techniques. When used for 3D vascular reconstruction from 2D digital subtracted angiography data, such an approach allows reconstructing well-contrasted 3D vascular network in comparison with results obtained by using standard algorithms.© (1996) COPYRIGHT SPIE--The International Society for Optical Engineering. Three-dimensional reconstruction from incomplete Fourier spectra: an extrapolation approach

While generally the watermarking methods are designed to protect high quality video (e.g. DVD), a continuously increasing demand for protecting very low bitrate video (VLBV) – e.g. in mobile networks, the video stream may be coded at 64kbit/s – is also met nowadays. In this respect, a special attention should be paid to the statistical behaviour of the video content. At our best knowledge, this paper presents the first statistical investigation on VLBV in the DCT (2D Discrete Cosine Transform) domain, thus identifying the particular way in which the VLBV obeys to the very popular Gaussian law. It also points to critical behaviour differences between the high and very low bitrate videos. These theoretical results are validated under the framework of watermarking experiments carried out in collaboration with the SFR mobile service provider (Vodafone group).

Very low bitrate video: a statistical analysis in the DCT domain

This paper describes the approach proposed by ARTEMIS-UBIMEDIA team at TRECVID 2012, Instance Search (INS) task [1]. The method is based on the Bag-of-Words representation obtained from uniform sampling of the frames of the videos. We propose a query expansion technique that employs the textual description of the queries to identify new instances of the query objects on Flickr in order to enrich the query descriptor with additional representative instances. 1 Structured Abstract Briefly, what approach or combination of approaches did you test in each of your submitted runs? (please use the run id from the overall results table NIST returns)  all runs: 1 frame per second sampling from the videos, frames resized to 384x288 surface, Hessian Affine detectors and RootSIFT descriptor.  F_X_NO_UbiBWVTR_1: BoW vectors generated at shot level. Single query BoW vector generated from the multiple example images.  F_X_NO_UbiBWVHF_2: BoW vectors generated at shot level. Query BoW vectors generated from images fetched from Flickr using the provided query textual description.  F_X_NO_UbiBWFFM_3: BoW vectors generated for each frame and for each query image. The score of the frame yielding the best score among the frames of a shot for a query is selected. After the querying the top 500 results are re-ranked with a color consistency check using MPEG-7 Color Structure the descriptor for the whole image queries and a region based object detection method for the partial image/object queries.  F_X_NO_UbiBWFFR_4: BoW vectors generated for each frame and for each query image. The score of the frame yielding the best score among the frames of a shot for a query is selected. For multiple queries of the same topic, the best score of the video clip among the different query runs is selected. What if any significant differences (in terms of what measures) did you find among the runs? Overall, the grouping of the video frames in a single video clip descriptor has yielded the best results while reducing significantly the number of BoW vectors to be compared. The Flickr-based expanded queries have provided satisfying results by employing images crawled from the internet and the query images (without using the binary mask). Based on the results, can you estimate the relative contribution of each component of your system/approach to its effectiveness? The large size of the vocabulary has compensated the reduced number of detected interest points from the resized video frames. The images collected from Flickr have improved the results for a number of topics which had less representative query images or reduced sizes of the query entities.
