A super-turbocharger utilizing a high speed, fixed ratio traction drive that is coupled to a continuously variable transmission to allow for high speed operation is provided. A high speed traction drive is utilized to provide speed reduction from the high speed turbine shaft. A second traction drive provides infinitely variable speed ratios through a continuously variable transmission. Gas recirculation in a super-turbocharger is also disclosed.

A turbocharged, compounded cycle ducted fan engine system includes a conventional internal combustion engine drivingly connected to a fan enclosed in a duct. The fan provides propulsive thrust by accelerating air through the duct and out an exhaust nozzle. A turbocharger is disposed in the duct and receives a portion of the air compressed by the fan. The turbocharger compressor further pressurizes the air and directs it to the internal combustion engine where it is burned and exits as exhaust gas to drive the turbine. A power turbine also driven by exhaust gas is also drivingly connected through the engine to the fan to provide additional power. The size and weight of the turbocharger are reduced since the compressor's work is partially achieved by the compression effect of the fan. The total propulsive thrust includes the fan generated thrust which bypasses the turbocharger and the thrust of exhaust gases exiting the turbine.

A turbocompound engine having a power turbine bypass valve and a control module for controlling opening and closing of the bypass valve. The turbocompound engine is capable of operating in a compression braking mode, and the control module opens the bypass valve in response to actuation of the compression braking, resulting in improved braking.

The invention refers to a supercharging system (6) for an internal combustion engine (1) incorporating in combination, a turbine (7), a compressor (8) and an electrical driven system (20) that is connected by any power transmission system (16, 19) to the crankshaft (4) or any other vehicle drive shaft of an internal combustion engine, where the turbine inlet is subjected to exhaust gases, causing the turbine wheel to rotate and thereby via the drive shaft causing mechanical rotating power.

Enhanced supercharging system and an internal combustion engine having such a system

The invention is a compound motor having an internal combustion engine, a turbine driven by exhaust from the engine and compressor connected to the turbine. The compound motor has a clutch means to declutch the compressor from the turbine and to disable the turbine from transferring power to a gear set. The gear set is capable of simultaneously receiving power from the engine and the turbine and transferring this power to a final output shaft. The clutch mechanism brake or debrakes, and clutches or declutches, in response to torque or rotational force exerted on the turbine by the exhaust gas from the engine.

Compound power plant

A compound traction engine for a heavy vehicle including a high temperature adiabatic four stroke reciprocating diesel engine arranged to drive a boost compressor through a differential gear. The other output of the gear is connected through a torque converter to the output shaft. The exhaust from the engine is fed to a turbine with an adjustable blade nozzle ring and the output from the compressor is connected to the air inlet of the engine and is also connected via a valve to the same turbine. The turbine is connected via a continuously variable transmission to the output shaft. An automatic control unit has inputs from an output torque/speed sensor and a boost pressure sensor and is arranged to control the variable gear and the turbine blade ring.
