We present an overview of our research effort on volume holographic digital data storage. Innovations, developments, and new insights gained in the design and operation of working storage platforms, novel optical components and techniques, data coding and signal processing algorithms, systems tradeoffs, materials testing and tradeoffs, and photon-gated storage materials are summarized.

Holographic data storage

Research into and the development of data storage devices is a race to keep up with the continuing demand for more capacity, more density, and faster readout rates. Improvements in conventional memory technologies-magnetic hard disk drives, optical disks, and semiconductor memories-have managed to keep pace with the demand for bigger, faster memories. However, there is strong evidence that these two-dimensional surface storage technologies are approaching fundamental limits. An alternative approach for next-generation memories is to store data in three dimensions. This article describes developments in holographic 3D memories, in which high density is achieved by superimposing many holograms within the same volume of recording material. Holographic storage is a promising candidate for next-generation storage. Research has demonstrated that holographic storage systems with desirable properties can be engineered. The next step is to build these systems at costs competitive with those of existing technologies and to optimize the storage media.

Micrometer-sized reflection holograms can be written into a rapidly rotating homogeneous photopolymer disk at the focus of a high-numerical-aperture beam and its retroreflection to implement high-capacity multilayer digital data storage. This retroreflection is generated by an optical system with positive unity magnification to ensure passive alignment of the counterpropagating beam. Analysis reveals that the storage capacity and transfer rate of this bit-based holographic storage system compare favorably with traditional page-based systems but at a fraction of the system complexity and cost. The analysis is experimentally validated at 532 nm by writing and reading 12 layers of microholograms in a 125-µm photopolymer disk continuously rotating at 3600 rpm. The experimental results predict a capacity limit of 140 Gbytes in a millimeter-thick disk or over 1 Tbyte with the wavelength and numerical aperture of Blu-Ray.

Microholographic multilayer optical disk data storage

There are distinct advantages to designing polymer systems that afford two distinct sets of material properties– an intermediate polymer that would enable optimum handling and processing of the material, while maintaining the ability to tune in different, fi nal polymer properties that enable the optimal functioning of the material. In this study, by designing a series of non-stoichiometric thiol-acrylate systems, a polymer network is initially formed via a base catalyzed Michael addition reaction that proceeds stoichiometrically via the thiol-acrylate “click” reaction. This self-limiting reaction results in a polymer with excess acrylic functional groups within the network. At a later point in time, the photoinitiated, free radical polymerization of the excess acrylic functional groups results in a highly crosslinked, robust material system. These two stage reactive thiol-acrylate networks that have intermediate stage rubbery moduli and glass transition temperatures that range from 0.5 MPa and − 10 ° C to 22 MPa and 22 ° C, respectively, are formulated and characterized. The same polymer networks can then attain glass transition temperatures that range from 5 ° C to 195 ° C and rubbery moduli of up to 200 MPa after the subsequent photocuring stage. The two stage reactive networks formed by varying the stoichiometric ratios of the thiol and acrylate monomers were shown to perform as substrates for three specifi c applications: shape memory polymers, impression materials, and as optical materials for writing refractive index patterns.

Two-Stage Reactive Polymer Network Forming Systems

An eye tracker having a waveguide for propagating illumination light towards an eye and propagating image light reflected from at least one surface of an eye, a light source optically coupled to the waveguide, and a detector optically coupled to the waveguide. Disposed in the waveguide is at least one grating lamina for deflecting the illumination light towards the eye along a first waveguide path and deflecting the image light towards the detector along a second waveguide path.

Apparatus for eye tracking

A general strategy for fabricating thick, optically flat photopolymer recording media with high dynamic range (M/#) that exhibit low levels of recording-induced Bragg detuning for holographic data storage is presented. In particular, media with M/# values as high as 42 in 1-mm-thick formats are obtained. We believe that these results are the first demonstration of a holographic storage medium with a dynamic range of this magnitude. In addition, we report the holographic recording and recovery of high-capacity (480-kbit) digital data pages in these media, further illustrating their data-storage capabilities.
