The present invention manages resources in a computing device to facilitate the allocation of resources amongst competing clients operating on the device. A hierarchy of budgets is constructed to encode restrictions on the aggregated use of a resource allocated by a resource provider to one or more clients. A resource manager validates and arbitrates requests to allocate resources to the one or more clients by resource providers in accordance with the budgets comprising the hierarchy. The resource manager notifies clients of availability and shortages of resources to promote compliance with the restrictions encoded in the budgets of the hierarchy.

Each domain is provided with an access right management device which creates a resource-sharing policy and performs processing for resource-sharing policy negotiation between a plurality of domain administrators. An access right management device that has created a resource-sharing policy identifies, for each policy unit included in the resource-sharing policy, an access right management device that is a negotiating partner to negotiate with about the policy unit in question. The access right management device generates negotiation information including an identification name of the identified negotiating-partner access right management device and the policy unit in question and sends the negotiation information to the negotiating-partner access right management device. Only when all policy units are agreed on by respective identified negotiating-partner access right management devices, the resource-sharing policy is set on shared resources.

A method for offloading execution load from a resource-constrained device to allow the device to run a resource-intensive software program. The method includes the step of accessing a program using a first device and determining wheter execution of the program will exceed resources of the first device. If the execution will exceed the resources of the first device, a load split is determined for the program to split the program into a first portion and a secong portion. The second portion of the program is offloaded to a second device, while the first portion of the program is retained on the first device. The first portion and second portion communicate via a network connection between the first device and the second device. Full program functionality is provided using the first device, wherein the functionality is provided by the first portion and second portion executing cooperatively on the first device and the second device, respectively.

A communication device for providing wireless communication for a personal data assistant in a compact package is provided. The communication device of the present invention includes a modem, an interface board and logic. The modem transmits and receives communications for the communication device. The interface board provides connectivity between the communication device and the personal data assistant, thereby allowing a user of the personal data assistant to transmit data using the modem of the communication device. The logic of the communication device periodically activates the modem to check for communications on a server. Furthermore, the communication device of the present invention includes a compact housing, thereby allowing the communication device to have a compact configuration.

A multitasking data processing system having a plurality of tasks and a shared resource and a method of controlling allocation of shared resources within a multitasking data processing system are disclosed. In response to a resource request for a portion of a shared resource by a particular task among the plurality of tasks, a determination is made whether or not granting the resource request would cause a selected level of resource allocation to be exceeded. In response to a determination that granting the resource request would not cause the selected level of resource allocation to be exceeded, the resource request is granted. However, in response to a determination that granting the resource request would cause the selected level of resource allocation to be exceeded, execution of the particular task is suspended for a selected penalty time. In one embodiment of the present invention, the shared resource is a memory.
