We investigate whether a classifier can continuously authenticate users based on the way they interact with the touchscreen of a smart phone. We propose a set of 30 behavioral touch features that can be extracted from raw touchscreen logs and demonstrate that different users populate distinct subspaces of this feature space. In a systematic experiment designed to test how this behavioral pattern exhibits consistency over time, we collected touch data from users interacting with a smart phone using basic navigation maneuvers, i.e., up-down and left-right scrolling. We propose a classification framework that learns the touch behavior of a user during an enrollment phase and is able to accept or reject the current user by monitoring interaction with the touch screen. The classifier achieves a median equal error rate of 0% for intrasession authentication, 2%-3% for intersession authentication, and below 4% when the authentication test was carried out one week after the enrollment phase. While our experimental findings disqualify this method as a standalone authentication mechanism for long-term authentication, it could be implemented as a means to extend screen-lock time or as a part of a multimodal biometric authentication system.

In recent years, along with the extraordinary diffusion of the Internet and a growing need for personal verification in many daily applications, automatic signature verification is being considered with renewed interest. Automatic Signature Verification: The State of the Art

The current need for large multimodal databases to evaluate automatic biometric recognition systems has motivated the development of the MCYT bimodal database. The main purpose has been to consider a large scale population, with statistical significance, in a real multimodal procedure, and including several sources of variability that can be found in real environments. The acquisition process, contents and availability of the single-session baseline corpus are fully described. Some experiments showing consistency of data through the different acquisition sites and assessing data quality are also presented.

MCYT baseline corpus: a bimodal biometric database

sssHandwritten signature is the most widely accepted biometric for identity verification. To facilitate objective evaluation and comparison of algorithms in the field of automatic handwritten signature verification, we organized the First International Signature Verification Competition (SVC2004) recently as a step towards establishing common benchmark databases and benchmarking rules. For each of the two tasks of the competition, a signature database involving 100 sets of signature data was created, with 20 genuine signatures and 20 skilled forgeries for each set. Eventually, 13 teams competed for Task 1 and eight teams competed for Task 2. When evaluated on data with skilled forgeries, the best team for Task 1 gives an equal error rate (EER) of 2.84% and that for Task 2 gives an EER of 2.89%. We believe that SVC2004 has successfully achieved its goals and the experience gained from SVC2004 will be very useful to similar activities in the future.

Identity authentication using improved online signature verification method

On-line signature verification

We describe a method for on-line handwritten signature veri!cation. The signatures are acquired using a digitizing tablet which captures both dynamic and spatial information of the writing. After preprocessing the signature, several features are extracted. The authenticity of a writer is determined by comparing an input signature to a stored reference set (template) consisting of three signatures. The similarity between an input signature and the reference set is computed using string matching and the similarity value is compared to a threshold. Several approaches for obtaining the optimal threshold value from the reference set are investigated. The best result yields a false reject rate of 2.8% and a false accept rate of 1.6%. Experiments on a database containing a total of 1232 signatures of 102 individuals show that writer-dependent thresholds yield better results than using a common threshold. ? 2002 Pattern Recognition Society.
