Protic Ionic Liquids: Properties and Applications

The transferable potentials for phase equilibria-united atom (TraPPE-UA) force field for hydrocarbons is extended to primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols by introducing the following (pseudo-)atoms:  common hydroxyl O and H for all alcohols, α-CH3, α-CH2, α-CH, and α-C for methanol, primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols, respectively. In the TraPPE-UA force field, the nonbonded interactions of these sites are governed by Lennard−Jones 12−6 potentials and Coulombic interactions of fixed partial charges. The values of these partial charges were borrowed from the optimized potentials for liquid simulations-united atom (OPLS−UA) force field [Jorgensen, W. L. J. Phys. Chem. 1986, 90, 1276]. The Lennard−Jones well depth and size parameters for the new interaction sites were determined by fitting to the single-component vapor−liquid-phase equilibria of a few selected model compounds. In a preceding project, functional forms for “short” Helmholtz energy equations of state for typical nonpolar and weakly polar fluids and for typical polar fluids were developed using simultaneous optimization. In this work, the coefficients of these short forms for the equations of state have been fitted for the fluids acetone, carbon monoxide, carbonyl sulfide, decane, hydrogen sulfide, 2-methylbutane (isopentane), 2,2-dimethylpropane (neopentane), 2-methylpentane (isohexane), krypton, nitrous oxide, nonane, sulfur dioxide, toluene, xenon, hexafluoroethane (R-116), 1,1-dichloro-1-fluoroethane (R-141b), 1-chloro-1,1-difluoroethane (R-142b), octafluoropropane (R-218), 1,1,1,3,3-pentafluoropropane (R-245fa), and fluoromethane (R-41). Short Fundamental Equations of State for 20 Industrial Fluids

In recent years, the number of non-aqueous solvents which mediate hydrocarbon–solvent interactions and promote the self-assembly of amphiphiles has been markedly increased by the reporting of over 30 ionic liquids which possess this previously unusual solvent characteristic. This new situation allows a different exploration of the molecular “solvophobic effect” and tests the current understanding of amphiphile self-assembly. Interestingly, both protic and aprotic ionic liquids support amphiphile self-assembly, indicating that it is not required for the solvents to be able to form a hydrogen bonded network. Here, the use of ionic liquids as amphiphile self-assembly media is reviewed, including micelle and liquid crystalline mesophase formation, their use as a solvent phase in microemulsions and emulsions, and the emerging field of nanostructured inorganic materials synthesis. Surfactants, lipids and block co-polymers are the focus amphiphile classes in this critical review (174 references).

Ionic liquids as amphiphile self-assembly media.

Es wird der Gultigkeitsbereich einer fruher1 angegebenen Methode zur Berechnung der thermodynamischen Daten von ternaren flussigen Mischungen von Nichtelektrolyten aus den Daten der zugehorigen binaren Systeme untersucht. Zunachst wird mit Hilfe des Zellmodells2 gezeigt, das kleine Grosenunterschiede der Molekule der drei Mischungspartner die Gultigkeit unserer Methode nicht beeintrachtigen. Kommen jedoch chemische Gleichgewichte in der Mischung vor, dann sind systematische Abweichungen zwischen den tatsachlichen ternaren Daten und den Ergebnissen unseres Ansatzes zu erwarten. Diese Abweichungen lassen sich nicht durch wenige ternare Konstanten beschreiben. Schlieslich wird die Berechnungsmethode auf 9 in der Literatur3–10 beschriebene ternare Systeme angewendet.
