The present invention relates to an apparatus and method for controlling vehicle motion. More specifically, the invention relates to an apparatus for improving vehicle stability by controlling the brake torque of a vehicle during, for example, cornering manuevers. In accordance with the present invention, vehicle stability is improved by independently controlling brake torque in response to sensed yaw rate.

Brake controlling system

A hydraulic brake system with slip control for automotive vehicles comprising a master cylinder (2) pressurizable by a hydraulic power booster (1), in which system valve(s) (31,27,32,28,33,23) are inserted between the master cylinder (2) and the wheel brakes (29,30,24,25) connected to the master cylinder (2) which allow pressure fluid removal from the wheel brakes (29,30,24,25) that can be replenished out of the pressure chamber (19) of the hydraulic power booster (1) by way of a change-over valve (36). A stroke limitation of the brake pedal (8) is effected during slip control. The end surface of the master cylinder piston (5) close to the working chamber (16) being larger than the is effective surface of the booster piston (4), and wherein a stepped piston is employed as master cylinder piston (5) with an annular surface (18) thereof being adapted to be acted upon in the actuating direction by the pressure prevailing in the working chamber (16). A non-return valve (37, 38) is connected to the change-over valve (36) normally assuming its closed position through which the wheel brakes (29,30,24,25) can reacted upon directly by the pressure prevailing in the pressure chamber (10) of the hydraulic power booster (1).

Hydraulic brake system with slip control

A wheel slip control system has a vehicle speed detector for detecting a running speed of a vehicle; a driving wheel rotating condition detector for detecting an actual driving wheel rotating speed of the vehicle and the acceleration thereof; an advance driving wheel speed computer for calculating an advance driving wheel speed using as parameters the above actual driving wheel rotating speed and acceleration thereof; a second throttle valve provided in an intake passage in a position upstream or downstream of the position where a first throttle valve interlocked with a vehicle accelerator pedal is located; a driver for opening and closing the second throttle valve; and an opening/closing controller for determining a target throttle position on the basis of the detected vehicle running speed and the advance driving wheel speed and controlling the driver so that an actual throttle position of the second throttle valve approaches the above target throttle position. According to above-mentioned characteristics, it is possible to attain superior acceleration and controllability, and the air fuel ratio and fuel consumption are held in a good condition.

Wheel slip control system

A pressure supply system for a vehicle according to the invention incorporates a pump and an accumulator in which an output pressure of the pump is maintained within a prescribed range by controlling the on-off operation of the pump according to the inner pressure of the accumulator. By changing the prescribed range of pressure according to the actual pressure requirement, for instance according to the change in the travelling speed of the vehicle, the burden on the system is reduced. The prescribed range can be changed either by simply changing the upper and/or lower pressure limits at which the pump is deactivated and activated, respectively, or by operating the pump for a prescribed time period which is dependent on the pressure requirement after a certain reference pressure value is reached. Thus, the structure of the fluid pressure system is simplified, and the generation of unnecessary high pressure can be avoided.

Pressure supply system having means for controlling an output pressure thereof

An antilock hydraulic braking system comprises a pump (16) which pumps through a pressure valve (20), a damping chamber (24), a non-return valve (28) and a choke position (31) into a pressure connection (22) connected to the brake line (12). To obtain low-noise energy supply together with a compact construction, while avoiding back-flow of hydraulic fluid from the braking system into the damping device (23), a non-return valve (28) is incorporated in the damping device (23).

Antilock hydraulic braking system

In a vehicle equipped with a propulsion control system combined with an anti-blocking system, a pressure reservoir provided as a brake pressure supply-source which can be charged by means of the return pump of the anti-blocking system, whereby the charging operation is valve-controlled so that the feed from the return pump is directed into the pressure reservoir during pressure-reduction phases of the propulsion control system, the pressure reservoir can also be charged, outside the control phases of the propulsion control system, either by operating the driver's brake pedal or by automatic activation of a charging circuit accompanied by the operation of the return pump.

Installation for charging a pressure reservoir provided as a pressure source within a propulsion control system of a motor vehicle

In a vehicle which is equipped with a propulsion control device combined with an antilock brake system, a pressure accumulator is provided for the brake pressure supply which, as can be seen from fig. 1, can be charged, controlled by valves, by means of the return pump of the antilock brake system, the return pump delivering into the pressure accumulator during the pressure reduction phases of the propulsion control. Outside the control phases of the propulsion control device, the pressure accumulator can be charged either by operation of the wheel brake or by automatic activation of a charging circuit with the aid of the return pump, when the vehicle is at a standstill or is in an unbraked drive condition.
