An alternating current generator for supplying the electrical loads on a motor vehicle. The generator has a stator core that carries a three-phase stator or output winding. The rotor of the generator has two claw pole members that are so oriented that the fingers of the pole members are aligned. Disposed between the two pole members is a third pole member having projections disposed between the aligned fingers of the claw pole members. The rotor has two field coils which are so arranged and energized that the magnetic polarity of the two claw pole members is the same and opposite the magnetic polarity of the third pole member. One of the field coils can be replaced by a permanent magnet and when this is done the generator is provided with a magnetic circuit that can divert permanent magnet flux away from the stator core. Flux diversion is controlled by supplying unidirectional current to the field winding under the control of a voltage regulator.

Liquid cooled electric motors including stator frames having cast in place cooling conduits are described. In an exemplary embodiment, the conduit is arranged in a generally helical configuration and the stator frame is cast around the conduit so that the conduit is embedded within, and integral with, the frame. Spacer, or stabilizer, bars are engaged to the conduit and provide support for the conduit and facilitate maintaining the desired spacing between lengths of conduit and between the conduit and the frame wall. The stator frame with the cast in place cooling conduit has the advantages of a liquid cooled motor yet is believed to be lower cost than known liquid cooled motors. The frame also is believed to be less susceptible to corrosion and liquid leaks as compared to known liquid cooled motors. Further, the advantage that the cooling coil and frame material may be different is provided, which enables selection of optimum material for the coil and frame with respect to cost, corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and machinability.

A motorized wheel hub assembly includes a sealed motor section having first (68) and second (92) coaxial shafts (72) extending from the motor section, the second shaft being a rotary shaft and a gear reduction section adjacent to the motor section, the gear reduction section including a pinion (122) at the end of the rotary shaft, a plurality of planet gears (114) rotatably mounted to the housing in meshing engagement with the pinion (122) and a third shaft (72) connected to the motor housing, all of the shafts being separate but coaxial. A hub (26) having an interior surface closely surrounds the motor and gear reduction sections and is rotably coupled to the first and third shafts. A ring gear (136) formed in the interior surface of the hub is in meshing engagement with the planet gears so that when the second shaft rotates at a selected speed, the hub rotates relative to the first and third shafts at a lesser speed. Preferably, the hub is partially filled with oil to conduct heat from the motor section to the outside.

A cooling system for an electric motor includes a cooling duct formed between a cooling jacket and a separate component surface. The separate component surface may define at least a portion of a wall of the cooling duct. The cooling duct may be configured to direct a cooling liquid along at least a portion of the separate component surface and draw heat from the electric motor. An inlet port may be in fluid communication with the cooling duct. The inlet port may be configured to receive the cooling liquid and to introduce the cooling liquid to the cooling duct. An outlet port may be in fluid communication with the cooling duct.

Cooling system for an electric motor

A cooling arrangement for electric machines comprising a heat-storing element provided with generally C-shaped channels and a cooling tube so configured and sized as to be insertable in the C-shaped channels of the heat-storing element is described herein. The cooling tube, once inserted in the channels, is deformed to conform to the C-shaped channels, thereby providing that heat stored in the heat-storing element is extracted by circulating cooling fluid inside the cooling tube.

Liquid cooling arrangement for electric machines

In a liquid-cooled electric generator, in particular a three-phase generator for motor vehicles and the like, having a rotor, a stator and a housing which accommodates the latter two and forms the bearing for the rotor shaft, as well as a device for liquid cooling (oil or water cooling) having a cooling jacket for a cooling liquid, the cooling jacket, on the one hand, is bounded by the closed external surface of the generator housing and, on the other hand, by a part, which has an accommodating cavity, of an engine block or gear block or similar unit to which the generator is attached and in which it is inserted.

To counteract the effects of centrifugal force on internal blades or vanes positioned in gaps (31) between adjacent claws (22, 23) of a claw-pole rotor (R) of a claw-pole alternator, a plastic sleeve (33) is fitted over the field winding (20) and has cooling fins or vanes or blades (32) projecting radially therefrom, at an inclination with respect to the axis of rotation of the rotor, and located between the inclined faces of the claw poles. The end portions (36, 37) projecting beyond the sleeve may be straight (FIG. 4) or the end portions (38, 39) may be curved (FIG. 5). Preferably, a curable casting compound is cast within the sleeve and secures the winding (20) in position, the sleeve being fitted in form of a circular bandage over the winding.

The supply system has a shared control unit (10) connected in parallel with the stable loads (7,7a) to the vehicle generator (1). The stable loads are insensitive to fluctuations in their supply voltage. The control unit has a first output supply line producing a constant voltage for those unstable loads such as lamps (11) which are sensitive to fluctuations in their supply voltage. A second output supply line (12) carries twice the generator's voltage and is connected to the vehicle starter battery (5a) in order to charge it. The control unit contains a static inverter supplied from the vehicle's normal supply and with a transformer at its output. The transformer has windings for producing the constant voltage and the charging voltage for the battery. The constant voltage is controlled by a semiconductor device.

In order to prevent the exertion of high pressure during the installation of electrical slip rings on the armature shafts of electrical machinery, and to provide secure holding of the slip rings without exerting radial stresses, the slip ring retainer mechanism according to the invention provides pressure rings which are mounted on the armature shaft and which engage respective end faces of the electrical slip ring. In a preferred construction, the slip rings are loosely slipped over an intermediate metallic bushing on which the compressive rings are then press-fit so as to bear against the sides of the slip rings. The intermediate bushing has an outer insulating layer and the pressure rings may be provided with electrical connectors for coupling to the exciter windings on the armature. The end faces of the slip rings may be suitably shaped or grooved to make form-fitting engagement with similarly shaped mating surface features of the compression rings.
