Cotton ( Gossypium spp .) is an economically important crop that is grown throughout the world. It is the main material in textile and the main economic resource for more than 100 millions of cotton farmers in China. Due to its main role in our economy, cotton biotechnology has been significantly improved in the last decades in China, which led to a significantly progress both in cotton research and production. Cotton biotechnology started from 1970’s in China has been improved greatly in various aspects such as tissue culture, protoplast culture and somatic hybridization, and recombination technology or gene engineering. In this paper, the cotton biotechnology status in China has been taken into account by keeping in view the work done by Chinese scientist, especially in cotton somatic culture, cotton protoplast culture and somatic hybridization, and transgenic cotton with insect resistance, diseases resistance and fiber quality improvement in China.

Advance in research and utilization of cotton biotechnology in China

3 Abstract: Cotton being a major cash and oil crop has a significant role in the industry and economy of the Pakistan so improved cultivars of the upland cotton is the main focus of the plant breeders. In tissue culture new plants have been developed from different sources like hypocotyls, cotyledon, root, anther of various species but efficient in vitro techniques are limited in cotton as compared to other major crops. Factors affecting the tissue culture response in Gossypium are genotype, donor plant, growth regulators, type of sugar, culture medium, temperature and subculture timing. The basic pH formulation is suitable to obtain the vigorous callus, it is also observed that the specificity of the culture medium influence the callus initiation and growth. There is a large difference in the ability to form callus between the different genotypes of the cotton, Coker was the 1st genotype that show the callus initiation and regeneration.

Regeneration of Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) Through Asexual Methods, A Review

The present work dealt with the influence of seven different sugar sources on cotton anther callus proliferation and embryogenesis. Later effects of various sugar sources on the proliferation of cotton anther callus were different, the callus that grew slowly on callus induction stage show growth superiority when they were transfered into same fresh medium. Embryogenesis and embryos can be obtained on the medium supplemented with starch, sucrose or maltose. Glucose and lactose were not advantageous to the differentiation of embryos. The addition of mannitol promoted the induction of embryogenic callus and teh fifferentiation of embryos.
