A novel contact roll assembly particularly suited for use in electro-chemical plating of metallic strip. A contact roll is rotatably mounted on a stationary support which is attached to a bus bar. Regions of contact between the stationary support and the contact roll are preferably by metallic inserts carried by the support. The inserts not only provide support for the contact roll but also provide bearing surfaces for journalling the roll and provide large surface contact areas for flow of plating current.

Method and apparatus for energizing metallic strip for plating

A roller electrode includes an elongated hollow roller, a stationary shaft, and an electrically conductive fluid. The hollow roller and the stationary shaft are electrically conductive. The hollow roller has an inner surface which confines an interior chamber. The stationary shaft is provided coaxially in the interior chamber of the hollow roller and is journalled to the hollow roller. The stationary shaft has an end section which extends out of the interior chamber for connection to a power supply. The fluid is provided in the interior chamber around the stationary shaft to provide a stable electrical connection between the stationary shaft and the hollow roller.

The present invention discloses an arrangement for cooling a roll (5). The arrangement comprises a housing (2) to be secured to the roll (5), a hollow shaft (8) mounted for rotational movement within the housing (2) and a cooling medium line to convey cooling medium into the roll (5) via the interior of the shaft (8). The cooling medium line comprising an inlet communicating with an elbow portion, a first length (27) of the elbow portion (20) extending from the inlet substantially perpendicular to the axis of the shaft and a second length (26) of the elbow portion extending from the first length in the direction of the axis of the shaft (8), the axes of the first and second lengths being in substantially the same plane.

Arrangement for cooling a roll

A composite roll comprises a shell of nickel alloy and a steel sleeve within the shell. The sleeve is in contact with the middle portion of the shell and out of contact with the end portions of the shell. An annulus of elastomer is disposed between the end portions of the shell and the sleeve. A collector head is secured to each end of the roll.

This invention discloses a conductor roll that is surrounded by a crown that extends along a substantial portion of the length of the conductor roll. The crown is designed to compensate for the deflection of the conductor roll when the conductor roll is placed under a load.

Apparatus and method for improving contact between a web and a roll

A hollow conductor roll is used in electrical zinc plating, the outer surface of which is made of middle carbon steel and hard metal plating, and the inner surface of which is made of pure metal with low hardness and good electric conductivity. The hard outer metal plating renders the roll less susceptible to damage thereby reducing production cost and the hollow roll is relatively easy to cool by passing cooling liquid therethrough.
