Multimodal Integration of Carbon Dioxide and Other Sensory Cues Drives Mosquito Attraction to Humans

. Mating behaviour in the Anopheles gambiae complex was studied in the laboratory, using an infra-red TV system to make observations in the ‘dark’. Maximum fertilization occurred when both sexes were at least 2 days old. In LD 12:12 most mating took place in the first hour of the dark phase. At this time, the males had erect fibrillae on the antennae and showed the maximum response to an artificial female flight tone, approaching, landing-on and attempting to clasp the sound source. The cycle of fibrillar erection and of responsiveness to sound continued in constant dark. Males did not appear to discriminate on contact, between their own and other species. Previously mated females actively resisted copulation, but, when tethered, were unable to prevent the deposition of further internal mating plugs. Free-flying, previously inseminated, females prevented the males from depositing internal plugs, but not from ejaculating and depositing external plugs. The differences between A.gambiae and the better known Stegomyia mosquitoes appear to be related to their different habits, A.gambiae males being less likely to encounter females of other species or inseminated females of their own species at the restricted time and place of mating.

This paper is an attempt to synthesize information available on C. p. quinquefasciatus in Africa. The latter is presently found in most urban areas of the African continent and in rural settlements which show some trends towards urbanization. In East Africa, and the islands of the Indian Ocean, C. p. quinquefasciatus is one of the major natural vectors of Wuchereria bancrofti. In addition it can also transmit, under laboratory conditions, some other pathogenic agents.Preimaginal forms develop in different kinds of man-made breeding-places, especially those containing polluted water. The situation in each African region is reviewed in detail.Female behaviour during the different phases of the gonotrophic cycle is analysed, together with population dynamics.Control methods by synthetic insecticides are discussed in relation to resistance problems and the characteristics of the breeding sites. Other control methods based on the use of growth regulators, genetic manipulation, biological agents (parasites and predators) and environmental management have been investigated as well. Most of them cannot be easily applied or are not yet applicable for control operations.

Biology and control of Culex pipiens quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 (Diptera, Culicidae) with special reference to Africa

After more than a half century without recognized local dengue outbreaks in the continental United States, there were recent outbreaks of autochthonous dengue in the southern parts of Texas (2004–2005) and Florida (2009–2011). This dengue reemergence has provoked interest in the extent of the future threat posed by the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti (L.), the primary vector of dengue and yellow fever viruses in urban settings, to human health in the continental United States. Ae. aegypti is an intriguing example of a vector species that not only occurs in the southernmost portions of the eastern United States today but also is incriminated as the likely primary vector in historical outbreaks of yellow fever as far north as New York, Philadelphia, and Boston, from the 1690s to the 1820s. Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti in the continental United States: a vector at the cool margin of its geographic range.

The diel landing/biting periodicity of the Trinidad strain of Aedes aegypti (L.) was monitored using human-bait during January-August 1999. Hourly light intensities were measured both indoors and outdoors at both urban and rural sites. The periodicity of females was diurnal and nocturnal, with 90% arriving during daylight and twilight and 10% during the night. The pattern of landing was trimodal, with consistent peaks at 0700 h, 1100 h and 1700 h. The diel periodicities at indoor and outdoor urban sites were virtually identical. In contrast, the periodicities in rural areas differed, with no nocturnal activities being recorded at indoor and outdoor sites. At both urban and rural sites, larger numbers of adults were collected outside than inside houses. A significant correlation between light intensities and mosquito landing patterns was observed. The implications of the changing landing patterns of Ae. aegypti within urban areas are discussed in light of the epidemiology and control of dengue fever in Trinidad.

Landing periodicity of Aedes aegypti with implications for dengue transmission in Trinidad, West Indies.

The dynamics of transmission of disease agents by vectors depends, in part, on the probability of host-vector contact, which can vary with fluctuations of both host and vector. As important as seasonal variations is 24-hour periodicity in activity. Periodicity in the landing of males and females of Aedes aegypti on man has been assessed by means of catches of 15 hours or longer, with several persons as a bait. The assessments were made in a suburban area of Tanzania and continued throughout one year. Activity was observed to be almost entirely diurnal and diphasic. Whereas the detailed activity pattern of males agreed closely with that found elsewhere in East Africa, that of the females was unusual on account of the symmetry of the morning and afternoon peaks. Possible causes of differences among studies are discussed.
