The problem of quantum collisions involving several particle systems is reviewed within the framework of multiple scattering theory. The basic apparatus of collision theory for nonrelativistic potential problems is first developed, and the Born and eikonal series are introduced. A general analysis is then given of multiple scattering expansions for several particle problems. We discuss in particular the Born developments, the Faddeev-Watson expansions, the Glauber method, and various multiple scattering approaches to the determination of the optical potential. Applications to atomic collision problems and to high-energy hadron-deuteron scattering are discussed at length. © 1974 American Physical Society.

The last two or three years have seen a considerable revival of the use of real nuclei, ones having A > 1, as targets in high energy collision experiments. That has been, I believe, because of the growing realization that the problem of dealing with nuclei theoretically is not as complicated as we might have imagined. Nuclear physics becomes, at billion volt energies, a very much simpler subject than it is at low energies. A high energy particle passing through a nucleus tends hardly to be deflected at all in its passage and is gone before any nuclear rearrangement it induces can take place. It is so very much more energetic than any nucleon in the nucleus that, for all practical purposes, when it collides with individual nucleons the others are simply stationary spectators.

The Glauber theory is extended to include spin variables for πD scattering. The results are compared with existing experiments and rather good fits are obtained. Predictions for forthcoming (experiments are given. The possibility of extracting the phase of πN amplitude from polarization experiments is briefly discussed.
