Beginning with an analysis of the debate on the usefulness of the concepts of ‘Americanization’ and ‘Westernization’, this essay reviews the recent research on the European-American relationship during the Cold War that has dealt with the cultural impact of the United States upon Europe. The second half is devoted to a discussion of relevant work on this subject in the fields of economic and business history. Overall, the article tries to bring out that those who have applied the concept of ‘Americanization’ to their research on cultural and/or economic history have been well aware of the complexities of trans-Atlantic relations in this period, whether they were viewed as a two-way exchange or as a process of circulation.

The debate on ‘Americanization’ among economic and cultural historians

This essay explores the process of ‘re-civilising’ the Germans after the barbaric crimes of the Nazi dictatorship. After exploring the linguistic resonances of the concept of ‘civility’, it takes a closer look at the exemplary processes of cultural demilitarisation, recovery of politeness, and sensitisation for human rights. The article concludes with some recommendations for further research.

German civility? Retying social bonds after barbarism

In June 2002 the ‘Friends of the German Film Archive’, a non-profit group and operator of the Arsenal movie house on Potsdamer Platz, held a symposium and film screening on the subject of East and West German television crime thrillers from the 1950s and early 1960s. The meeting was well attended both by media scholars and the wider public, some of whom remembered viewing the shows when they were first aired. The discussion, based for the most part on the recollections of television pioneers — including directors Hans-Joachim Hildebrandt and Jurgen Roland, and actors Hannelore Elsner and Helmut Lange — was a fascinating look at the early years of television, an era before recording technology when television workers produced television live. Panelists’ comments ranged widely on issues common to both systems in the early years of television, from the pros and cons of available technologies, to the production schedule, the difficulties of acting for and broadcasting live television, and even the relative lack of respect the medium enjoyed among Germans in the 19505.1 But the harmonious and even jovial tone set early in the forum soon gave way to deeper tensions. One panelist referred to the crime thriller Blaulicht as merely the German Democratic Republic’s (GDR) answer to the West German Stahlnetz series, a claim vigorously denied by Blaulicht’s longtime director, Hans-Joachim Hildebrandt.

Split Screens? Television in East Germany, 1952–89

Zwar ist der Kulturbegriff in der wissenschaftlichen Erforschung der Politik fruh heimisch geworden, der cultural turn fand hier aber erst sehr spat Resonanz. Dieser zunachst paradoxe Befund erklart sich daraus, dass die Semantik des Kulturbegriffs, wie er seit den fruhen sechziger Jahren durch das wegweisende Konzept der Politischen Kultur eingefuhrt wurde, in eine ganz andere Richtung wies als die Ansatze, die man heute gemeinhin mit einem kulturalistischen Ansatz verbindet. Political culture fugte sich vielmehr fast bruchlos in die Forschungstradition der politischen Wissenschaften ein und war nicht geeignet, einen Paradigmenwechsel herbeizufuhren. Symbol- und zeichentheoretische Ansatze, der linguistic turn oder interaktionistische Konzepte, kurz: was man heute mit dem Kulturbegriff verbindet, fanden in die Politikwissenschaft aus zwei Grunden schwer Aufnahme: Erstens erschwert es die unmittelbare Zeitbindung und auch die normative Funktion der Politikwissenschaft, die »unterirdischen«, weniger offensichtlichen, vielleicht unbewussten Dimensionen politischer Strukturen und politischen Handelns, welche in einem kulturwissenschaftlichen Zugang prominent sein mussten, zu thematisieren.

Kulturwissenschaft der Politik: Perspektiven und Trends

In der Forschung zur Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland besteht heute weitgehend Konsens, dass die 1950er und die 1960er Jahre eine Phase tiefgreifenden gesellschaftlichen Wandels gewesen sind — kulturell, okonomisch und politisch. Der gesamte Zeitraum wird mittlerweile als die entscheidende Formationsphase der Bundesrepublik angesehen, die, wesentlich befordert durch transnationale Einflusse, den eigentlichen Bruch mit der Vergangenheit brachte. Ihr Ergebnis ist wahlweise als „Liberalisierung“ (Herbert 2002), als „Umkehr“ (Jarausch 2004) oder auch als „ Westermsierung“ (Doering-Manteuffel 2000) bezeichnet worden. So unumstritten dieser Befund, so umstritten seine wissenschaftliche Erschliesung.
