Biodegradation of dairy effluent by using microbial isolates obtained from activated sludge

A total of 120 water and sewage samples were collected from 20 stations over six consecutive seasons in two years in order to study the possible impact of domestic sewage on the lotic water in and around Cuttack, India. A majority of samples exceeded the maximum permissible limit set by WHO for NH4
+ and NO3
- contents. Total viable count (TVC) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) counts in all the samples were high and the waters were not potable. The nutrient characteristics of the study area exhibited drastic temporal variation indicating highest concentration during the summer season compared to winter and rains. The persistence of dissolved oxygen (DO) deficit and very high biochemical oxygen demands (BOD) all along the water courses suggest that the deoxygenation rate of lotic water was much higher than reoxygenation. Hierarchical cluster analysis of the various physico-chemical and microbial parameters established three different zones and the most contaminated zone was found to be near the domestic sewage mixing points.

Hydrology and Assessment of Lotic Water Quality in Cuttack City, India

The study was conducted to findout the physico-chemical and bacteriological characteristics of Noyyal River and ground water quality of Perur, India. The river water and ground water (bore well and open well) samples were collected in and around Perur and analyzed for various physico-chemical and bacteriological parameters. The study indicated that the mean value of studied parameters, except phosphate, biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the river water and ground water samples were within the permissible limit. The parameters include total suspended solids (TSS- 132.2 mgl-1), BOD (9.55 mgl-1), COD (19.28 mgl-1), phosphate (PO4 2-- 1.58 mgl-1) and total nitrogen (TN- 2.04 mgl-1) of the river water sample were found higher when compared to the ground water samples. The bacteriological study showed that the total heterotrphic bacteria (THB - 124.4 x 103 CFU/ml), Total Coliforms (TC-2600 MPN/10ml), Faecal Coliforms (FC-1750 MPN/10ml), Faecal Streptococci (FS- 120 MPN/10ml) and FC/FS ratio (14.6) in the river water samples were found to be greater than the standard WHO limits. The generic distribution in the samples revealed that the presence of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Enterobacter, Streptococci, Bacillus and Micrococcus were predominant in river water samples. The river water was found to be unfit for human consumption due to the exceeding level of Coliforms. The quality of ground water around Noyyal River was found to be safe and utilizable for cultivation purposes. If the quality management is properly maintained, the river water could be utilized for a wide range of application viz, irrigation, drinking etc.

Impact of sugar mill and distillery effluents on water quality of River Gelabil, Assam

Levels of thirteen heavy metal in pond/stagnated water bodies around few well sites and two group gathering stations of RDS-field in Sibsagar district of Assam have been assessed and their seasonal variations as well as extent of lateral spread out have been investigated. Heavy metals - Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn, Hg, As and V have been found marginally above background levels in close proximity to the group gathering stations and new/ongoing well sites. Whereas metal levels around production and abandoned wells lie within background levels. Results show marked seasonal variations; and extent of lateral spread out was insignificant.
