SUMMARY

A new model of the quiet-time, near-Earth magnetic field has been derived using a comprehensive approach, which includes not only POGO and Magsat satellite data, but also data from the Orsted and CHAMP satellites. The resulting model shows great improvement over its predecessors in terms of completeness of sources, time span and noise reduction in parameters. With its well separated fields and extended time domain of 1960 to mid-2002, the model is able to detect the known sequence of geomagnetic jerks within this frame and gives evidence for an event of interest around 1997. Because all sources are coestimated in a comprehensive approach, intriguing north–south features typically filtered out with other methods are being discovered in the lithospheric representation of the model, such as the S Atlantic spreading ridge and Andean subduction zone lineations. In addition, this lithospheric field exhibits significantly less noise than previous models as a result of improved data selection. The F-region currents, through which the satellites pass, are now treated as lying within meridional planes, as opposed to being purely radial. Results are consistent with those found previously for Magsat, but an analysis at Orsted altitude shows exciting evidence that the meridional currents associated with the equatorial electrojet likely close beneath the satellite. Besides the model, a new analysis technique has been developed to infer the portion of a model parameter state resolved by a particular data subset. This has proven very useful in diagnosing the cause of peculiar artefacts in the Magsat vector data, which seem to suggest the presence of a small misalignment bias in the vector magnetometer.

Extending comprehensive models of the Earth's magnetic field with Ørsted and CHAMP data

The westward drift is one of the most well known features of the geomagnetic field. In this paper we come back to the apparent drift of the main field as seen at the Earth's surface, and show that there is no evidence for a body drift but rather clear evidence for a latitude-dependent drift. Computing the fluid flow at the core mantle boundary (CMB), in the frozen flux and geostrophic hypothesis, we also obtain, among other components, a clear differential zonal rotation of the fluid, symmetrical with respect to the Equator. This differential rotation changes with time, with a time constant of the order of 10 years. Dynamic considerations lead us to think that, during such a time interval, the change in the zonal toroidal flow inside the core consists of motions in which axial cylindrical annuli rotate rigidly about the Earth's axis of rotation. Then, for the 1969–85 time-span, the change in the core angular momentum is shown to balance the change in the mantle angular momentum.

Westward drift, core motions and exchanges of angular momentum between core and mantle

We consider the problem of constructing a time-dependent map of the magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary. We use almost all the available data from the last 300 years to produce two maps, one for the period 1690-1840 and the other for 1840-1990. We represent the spatial dependency of the field using spherical harmonics, the time dependency using a cubic B-spline basis, and seek the smoothest solutions compatible with the observations. We argue that, for observations from permanent magnetic observatories, the most efficient strategy is to use the first differences of annual means; for satellite data, the most efficient strategy is simply to limit the number of data used so as to minimize any tendency to map the crustal field into the core field. The resulting model fits the observatory data better than any previous model. The resulting time-dependent field map exhibits much of the same structure in the field and its secular variation identified in earlier studies.

Time-dependent mapping of the magnetic field at the core-mantle boundary

A comprehensive review is presented of the characteristics of theta aurora as revealed from four imaging efforts with the DE 1 and 2 satellites. The theta aurora consists of an auroral oval with a sun-aligned arc extending from the dayside to the nightside sectors of the oval. The DE 1 spacecraft provided high altitude simultaneous measurements of the electric and magnetic fields and plasma and the DE 2 collected equivalent low altitude data on the four events. The plasma was found to convect sunward when the transpolar arc appeared, while the convection was antisunward in other regions over the polar cap. The arc plasmas featured field-aligned electron acceleration into the polar atmosphere and field-aligned current sheets, both of which were sparse over the rest of the polar cap. The ions originated in the ionosphere and the solar wind; ions over the rest of the polar cap mainly arrived from the magnetosphere. Further discussions are provided of the dominant electrons and ions and the associated flow directions into and out of the various regions of the pole, similarities between the transpolar arc and the auroral oval, and interactions between the ionosphere and the auroral phenomena.

The theta aurora

In August 1981 the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy revised the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF). It is the second revision since the inception of the IGRF in 1968. The revision extends the earlier series of IGRF models from 1980 to 1985, introduces a new series of definitive models for 1965-1975, and defines a provisional reference field for 1975-1980. The revision consists of: (1) a model of the main geomagnetic field at 1980.0, not continuous with the earlier series of IGRF models, together with a forecast model of the secular variation of the main field during 1980-1985; (2) definitive models of the main field at 1965.0, 1970.0, and 1975.0, with linear interpolation of the model coefficients specified for intervening dates; and (3) a provisional reference field for 1975-1980, defined as the linear interpolation of the 1975 and 1980 main-field models. The new models are series of solid spherical harmonics up to and including the tenth degree and order for the main-field models, and up to and including the eighth degree and order for the secular variation model. The models were derived from three sets of proposed models by taking weighted means. The weights were chosen according to the apparent accuracy of the proposed models. A brief history of the IGRF, a review of basic formulas, and a set of world contour maps of the geomagnetic elements based on the IGRF 1980 model are included.

International Geomagnetic Reference Field: the third generation.

Magsat data from the magnetically quiet days of November 5-6, 1979, were used to derive a thirteenth degree and order spherical harmonic geomagnetic field model, MGST(6/80). The model utilized both scalar and high-accuracy vector data and fit that data with root-mean-square deviations of 8.2, 6.9, 7.6 and 7.4 nT for the scalar magnitude, B(r), B(theta), and B(phi), respectively. The model includes the three first-order coefficients of the external field. Comparison with averaged Dst indicates that zero Dst corresponds with 25 nT of horizontal field from external sources. When compared with earlier models, the earth's dipole moment continues to decrease at a rate of about 26 nT/yr. Evaluation of earlier models with Magsat data shows that the scalar field at the Magsat epoch is best predicted by the POGO(2/72) model but that the WC80, AWC/75 and IGS/75 are better for predicting vector fields.

The utilization of satellite and surface data together permitted the incorporation of a solution for the anomaly field at each observatory. The residuals of the observatory measurements to such models is commensurate with the actual measurment accuracy. Incorporation of the anomaly estimation enabled the inclusion of stable time derivatives of the spherical harmonic coefficients up to the third derivative. A spherical harmonic model is derived with degree and order 13 in its constant and first time derivative terms, six in its second derivative terms and four in its third derivative terms.
