An emendation of the generic description of Scleroderma is proposed to consider the membranaceous veil like, or granulose patches, both on the base of the globose basidiome or on the upper part of the stipe, formed by the growth of the basidiome, which breaks the exoperidium. Veligaster previously segregated by this character, is a synonym. Guzman’s classification of the genus in 3 sections is followed, however due to the change of the type of the genus for S. verrucosum, Sect. Aculeatispora is now a synonym of Sect. Scleroderma, and S. citrinum that was in Sect. Scleroderma is now in a new section named Reticulatae. A review of the 21 Mexican species of Scleroderma is presented, 14 of these are accepted. The most common species in the country is S. nitidum in the tropical and subtropical forests. New localities from Mexico and foreign countries are discussed in S. bermudense, S. bovista, S. citrinum, S. hypogaeum, S. michiganense, S. polyrhizum, and S. pseudostipitatum. On the other hand, it is discussed that S. sinnamariense seems absent in Mexico, because it was confused with S. bermudense.

An emendation of Scleroderma, new records, and review of the known species in Mexico

The third check-list of macroscopic ascomycetes known in Mexico until 1996 is presented. There are 544 species recorded from Mexico, of which 269 were reported between 1983-1996.The ecological and geographical distribution of the species is discussed and a brief analysis of the development of the knowledge of these fungi in Mexico is made.

New phylogenetic studies focused on the family Sarcosomataceae support the independence of the genera Plectania, Pseudoplectania, Donadinia, Sarcosoma, Galiella and Urnula. Galiella is restricted to the temperate species, while the tropical taxa seem to be more related to the family Chorioactidaceae, and are here accomodated in the prioritary genus Trichaleurina. The lineage including the type species of Urnula is here shown to include also several morphologically deviant species. The genus Pseudosarcosoma is here proposed to accommodate Sarcosoma latahensis/Plectania latahense in the family Chorioactidaceae, since this lineage is not related to the type species of the genus Sarcosoma, S. globosum

Phylogenetic studies in the family Sarcosomataceae (Ascomycota, Pezizales)

A preliminary inventory of fungi, most of them macrofungi, from the municipality of San Sebastian del Oeste, Jalisco, Mexico, studied in three years, is presented. The area is largely characterized by pine, oak, mesophytic, tropical deciduous and tropical subdeciduous forests with few agriculture zones. Based on 583 specimens, 216 species were identified, of which 89.4% correspond to Basidiomycota, 8.8% to Ascomycota, 1.3% to Myxomycota and 0.5% to Deuteromycota. Furthermore 35 new records for the state of Jalisco and two new species for Mexico: Amanita roseitincta (Murrill) Murrill and Ramaria abietina (Pers. : Fr.), are documented.
