A novel discrete variable representation (DVR) is introduced for use as the L2 basis of the S‐matrix version of the Kohn variational method [Zhang, Chu, and Miller, J. Chem. Phys. 88, 6233 (1988)] for quantum reactive scattering. (It can also be readily used for quantum eigenvalue problems.) The primary novel feature is that this DVR gives an extremely simple kinetic energy matrix (the potential energy matrix is diagonal, as in all DVRs) which is in a sense ‘‘universal,’’ i.e., independent of any explicit reference to an underlying set of basis functions; it can, in fact, be derived as an infinite limit using different basis functions. An energy truncation procedure allows the DVR grid points to be adapted naturally to the shape of any given potential energy surface. Application to the benchmark collinear H+H2→H2+H reaction shows that convergence in the reaction probabilities is achieved with only about 15% more DVR grid points than the number of conventional basis functions used in previous S‐matrix Kohn...

The Magnus expansion and some of its applications

Nonadiabatic effects play an important role in many areas of physics and chemistry. The coupling between electrons and nuclei may, for example, lead to the formation of a conical intersection between potential energy surfaces, which provides an efficient pathway for radiationless decay between electronic states. At such intersections the Born-Oppenheimer approximation breaks down, and unexpected dynamical processes result, which can be observed spectroscopically. We review the basic theory required to understand and describe conical, and related, intersections. A simple model is presented, which can be used to classify the different types of intersections known. An example is also given using wavepacket dynamics simulations to demonstrate the prototypical features of how a molecular system passes through a conical intersection.

Beyond Born-Oppenheimer: molecular dynamics through a conical intersection.

This review describes recent research into the properties of the chromophore-TiO2 interface that forms the basis for photoinduced charge separation in dye-sensitized semiconductor solar cells. It focuses particularly on an atomistic picture of the electron-injection dynamics. The interface offers an excellent case study, pertinent as well to a variety of other photovoltaic systems, photo- and electrochemistry, molecular electronics, analytical detection, photography, and quantum confinement devices. The differences between chemists' and physicists' models for describing molecules and bulk materials, respectively, create challenges for the characterization of interfaces that include both of these components. We give an overall picture of the interface by starting with a description of the properties of the chromophores and semiconductor separately, and then by discussing the coupled system, including the chromophore-semiconductor binding, electronic structure, and electron-injection dynamics. Explicit time-dependent modeling is particularly valuable for an understanding of the ultrafast electron injection because it shows a variety of individual injection events with well-defined dynamical features that cannot be made apparent by an average reaction-rate description.

Theoretical studies of photoinduced electron transfer in dye-sensitized TiO2.

Predicting the electronic structure of extended organic molecules constitutes an important fundamental task of modern chemistry. Studies of electronic excitations, charge-transfer, energy-transfer, and isomerization of conjugated systems form the basis for our understanding of the photophysics and photochemistry of complex molecules1-3 as well as organic nanostructures and supramolecular assemblies.4,5 Photosynthesis and other photochemical biological processes that constitute the basis of life on Earth involve assemblies of conjugated chromophores such as porphyrins, chlorophylls, and carotenoids.6-8 Apart from the fundamental interest, these studies are also closely connected to numerous important technological applications.9 Conjugated polymers are primary candidates for new organic optical materials with large nonlinear polarizabilities.10-19 Potential applications include electroluminescence, light emitting diodes, ultrafast switches, photodetectors, biosensors, and optical limiting materials.20-27 Optical spectroscopy which allows chemists and physicists to probe the dynamics of vibrations and electronic excitations of molecules and solids is a powerful tool for the study of molecular electronic structure. The theoretical techniques used for describing spectra of isolated small molecules are usually quite different from those of molecular crystals, and many intermediate size systems, such as clusters and polymers, are not readily described by the methods developed for either of these limiting cases.28
