A theory of highly condensed matter

In the early 1960s, astronomers were puzzled by quasars — sources of intense radio emission that seemed to be stars, but had unintelligible optical spectra. In 1963, Maarten Schmidt solved the puzzle by recognizing the Balmer lines of hydrogen, strongly redshifted, in the spectrum of the quasar 3C 273. Schmidt reached the "most direct and least objectionable" conclusion, that 3C 273 was no star, but the enormously bright nucleus of a distant galaxy.

Male Wistar rats were subjected to 20 min of cerebral ischemia by means of 4-vessel occlusion. The topography of regional, selective neuron loss in this model corresponded to areas with pronounced glutamate high affinity uptake (presynaptic receptors), suggesting that transmitter glutamate is involved in the mechanism of neuron damage. One group of animals was injected with the glutamate antagonist, glutamic acid diethyl ester (GDEE) before ischemia. The regional neuron loss was rated using a semiquantitative scale. No statistically significant difference was found between the groups. The results do not exclude a possible role of transmitter glutamate in the pathogenesis of ischemic brain damage. More specific and potent glutamate antagonists are needed in order to clarify such a mechanism.

It is pointed out that the measurement of the deceleration parameter by Sandage (1972) implies an upper limit of a few tens of electron volts on the sum of the masses of all the possible light, stable particles that interact only weakly. In the discussion of the problem, it is assumed that the universe is expanding from an initially hot and condensed state as envisaged in the 'big-bang' theories.

Es werden die Gleichungen, welche die Polarisierbarkeit anisotroper Medien ausdrucken in relativistischer Form aufgestellt. Auf diese Weise sind sie auch im Falle bewegter Dielektrika anwendbar. Auf Grund dieser Gleichungen wird dann die Lagrange-Funktion des elektromagnetischen Feldes angegeben, aus der dann die Feldgleichungen, die kanonischen Funktionen und der Energie-Impuls-Tensor abgeleitet werden konnen.

One Hundred Years of the Eötvös Experiment

Die auf das in ein elektromagnetisches Feld gestellte, ruhende Dielektrikum wirkende Kraft wird als Summe folgender Krafte aufgefasst: der auf die in der polarisierten Materie entstandenen Dipole ausgeubten Translationskraft, der zur Aufrechterhaltung der Polarisation gegenuber den quasielastischen Kraften notwendigen Kraft und der auf den Polarisationsstrom wirkenden Lorentzschen Kraft. Der erhaltene Kraftdichteausdruck steht mit den Erhaltungssatzen im Einklang und kann aus dem Abrahamschen Energie-Impuls-Tensor hergeleitet werden. Im Laufe der Untersuchung des in Kristallkorpern auftretenden Drehmomentes und der durch elektromagnetische Wellen hervorgerufenen Kraftwirkungen wird gezeigt, dass diese Erscheinungen durch den Abrahamschen Tensor richtig beschrieben werden.

The cosmic neutrino density hitherto produced by the stars is estimated. Experimental determination of this quantity would be of great importance and any discrepancy between estimated and experimental value would be of great consequence for cosmogony. A brief review of the indirect (gravitational) and direct (atomphysical) possibilities of observation is given.
