This paper gives a review of acoustic and ultrasonic optical fiber sensors (OFSs). The review covers optical fiber sensing methods for detecting dynamic strain signals, including general sound and acoustic signals, high-frequency signals, i.e., ultrasonic/ultrasound, and other signals such as acoustic emissions, and impact induced dynamic strain. Several optical fiber sensing methods are included, in an attempted to summarize the majority of optical fiber sensing methods used to date. The OFS include single fiber sensors and optical fiber devices, fiber-optic interferometers, and fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs). The single fiber and fiber device sensors include optical fiber couplers, microbend sensors, refraction-based sensors, and other extrinsic intensity sensors. The optical fiber interferometers include Michelson, Mach-Zehnder, Fabry-Perot, Sagnac interferometers, as well as polarization and model interference. The specific applications addressed in this review include optical fiber hydrophones, biomedical sensors, and sensors for nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. Future directions are outlined and proposed for acousto-ultrasonic OFS.

Acousto-Ultrasonic Optical Fiber Sensors: Overview and State-of-the-Art

This paper examines on the obstacles specific to the implementation of non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques in additive manufacturing (AM). The general challenges impeding the adoption of AM for volume production of parts, and the use of NDT techniques to ameliorate some of these challenges are studied. These challenges include the lack of understanding of AM materials, and insufficient standards for the mechanical testing and NDT of additively manufactured parts. An overview on the principle of operation for in-process inspection NDT methods is presented. The techniques include thermography, and acoustic emission testing. The applications of these NDT techniques in AM and their suitability for defects detection of additively manufactured parts are reviewed. The sensitivity, and the advantages and disadvantages of each technique are evaluated. The types of defects, and the detectability of these defects by NDT techniques are assessed.

This review summarises the state of knowledge on acoustic emission (AE) techniques applied to material property evaluation during indentation (e.g. hardness) testing. There are two aspects of application of AE technique to indentation which makes it unique, i.e. (1) enhancing the understanding of the evolution of material accommodation mechanisms under loading and (2) qualitative and quantitative evaluation of mechanical properties such as fracture toughness and bond strength from the AE signal. Both of these aspects have the potential to improve our understanding of the structure property relationships of current and future generation materials. In addition, the knowledge developed here can be incorporated to improve the AE based condition monitoring systems for stress critical applications. Indentation testing and its acoustic emission response: applications and emerging trends

We experimentally and numerically investigate a diagnostic method for detecting hidden delamination in composite panels, using highly nonlinear solitary waves. Solitary waves are a type of nonlinear waves with strong energy intensity and non-distortive nature, which can be controllably generated in one-dimensional granular crystals. In this study, we use granular crystals as a combined sensor and actuator to detect hidden delamination in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite panels. Specifically, we locally excite a CFRP composite specimen using the granular crystal as an actuator and measure the reflected waves that carry the specimen's diagnostic information using the same device as a sensor. We first investigate the effect of the panel's boundary conditions on the response of the reflected solitary waves. We then investigate the interactions of a solitary wave with delamination hidden in the CFRP composite specimen. Lastly, we define a damage index based on the solitary waves' responses to identify the location of the hidden delamination in the CFRP composite panel. The solitary wave-based diagnostic method can provide unique merits, such as portable and fast sensing of composites' hidden damage, thereby with the potential of being used for hot spot monitoring of composite-based structures.

Solitary wave-based delamination detection in composite plates using a combined granular crystal sensor and actuator

Typical acoustic emission signal characteristics are described and techniques which localize the signal source by processing the acoustic delay data from multiple sensors are discussed. The instrumentation, which includes sensors, amplifiers, pulse counters, a minicomputer and output devices is examined. Applications are reviewed.
