Three groups of 11 New Zealand White (NZW) rabbit does, each were reared from 12 weeks of age on iso-energetic diets containing 16, 14 or 12% crude protein (CP) were used to study influences on productive performance, digestibility, some carcass traits, haematological, biochemical and hormonal parameters of rabbit does. The results showed rabbits fed on 16% protein diet had heavier body weights (BW) and body weight gains (WG) than the other groups. Daily feed intake (DFI) decreased and daily protein intake (DPI) increased by increasing dietary CP level whilst the feed conversion ratio (FCR) slightly improved as dietary CP increased. Dressing percentage increased slightly with increasing dietary protein level, while, rabbits fed 12% protein diet had a lower carcass weights compared to others. Moreover, the assessment results of mated does clarified significant increase in average daily or total FI and FCR, but significant decrease in kindling (%) in group fed 14% CP and in fertility and prolificacy% in 12 and 14% CP groups assessment of reproductive parameters, low protein levels had an adverse effect on litter size and kidney and liver weights of kids, while bunny weight decreased in the group fed 14% CP. However, plasma biochemical analysis showed a decrease in blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels and activity of alanine-aminotransferase (ALT) and increase in creatinine in both two CP levels while no significant change in the concentration of total protein (TP), albumin (A), globulin (G), A/G ratio, calcium (Ca), phosphorous (Ph), iron (Ir) and aspartate-aminotransferase (AST) activity among three experimental groups was recorded. Furthermore, hormonal assay revealed a decrease in insulin.

Some productive, reproductive and physiological effects of using different dietary protein levels in rabbit does.

The simplified and half-simplified diets are a new technology that combines economy and welfare intestinal. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of simplified and half-simplified diets, with and without exogenous enzymes, on the productive performance of growing rabbits. A Reference diet, two simplified diets and eight half-simplified diets had been utilized. The main fibrous sources used were the alfalfa hay (ALH), hay from the upper third of the cassava foliage (HUTCF) and cassava leaf meal (CLM), using a completely randomized design with 11 treatments and eight repetitions. The enzymes used were the carbohydrases (alpha-galactosidase, galactomanase, xylanase and beta-glucanase) and phytase. The consumption of animals fed with diets with high inclusion of CLM was lower than the other. The daily weight gain was higher in animals fed with the reference diet, half-simplified diet based on HUTCF and half-simplified diets based on the mix of ALH and CLM. A positive effect of exogenous enzymes inclusion, on the performance parameters, was not observed. Based on these results we conclude that the simplified and half-simplified diets provide decrease in productive performance. Considering the proportionate economy in the cost of feed, the half simplified based on HUTCF may be an interesting alternative. KEYWORDS: cassava foliage, productive performance, rabbit production.

The effects of decreasing levels of crude protein (CP) and enzymatic supplementation on digestive traits and caecal content composition of growing rabbits were studied. In a completely randomized design 54 weaned New Zealand White rabbits were divided in four groups of 11 rabbits each and one group of 10 rabbits. The treatment groups fed on diets with 17, 16, 15 or 14% of CP supplemented with 0.05% of enzymatic complex (Vegproâ) with cellulase and protease activities. The control group fed a diet with 17% of CP without the enzymatic complex. The weigth of the full digestive tract, full and empty caecum, and caecum content were affected (P<0.05) by the CP level of the diet. Organic matter percentage, ammonia nitrogen percentage, and molar proportion of acetic and propionic acid in the caecum content were affected by CP level of the diet (P<0.05). The redution of CP level of the diet up to 14% did not show negative effects on evaluated traits.

Two experiments using New Zealand White x Californian rabbits were carried out with the objective of evaluating the effect of fiber source particle size on digestive traits of growing rabbit and the production, chemical composition and cecotrophes nutritive contribuition on dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) base. Four diets were prepared with different particle size of sugar cane bagasse with average geometric diameters of .231, .506, .616 and .833 mm. The productive performance and weight of the full and empty digestive tract, digestive tract content, full and empty cecum and cecum content were not affected, however the ammonia nitrogen percentage in the caecum content was significantly increased by increasing particle size of sugar cane bagasse. In cecotrophy evaluation, effects of particle size on cecotrophes production, DM and CP content ingested were observed, but the cecotrophes chemical composition was not affected by diets.

Efeito da granulometria do bagaço de cana sobre as características digestivas e a contribuição nutritiva dos cecotrofos

Sixty New-Zealand White weaned rabbits were used in the present study to determine the effects of low protein diet administering papaya latex of Carica papaya as natural feed additive and enzymes complex on their productive capabilities. The present study lasted 56 days and was carried out during growing period (from weaning at 35 days to marketing age at 91 days). The growing animals were divided into four comparable groups each containing 15 growing rabbits. The first group was kept untreated (control, 17% CP) and fed a commercial diet without supplementation, while the other groups were fed low protein (14%) diets supplemented with papaya latex at levels 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09% during the experimental period. The results revealed that, rabbits fed low protein diets supplemented with papaya latex (0.07 and 0.09%) had significantly (P≤0.05) higher final body weight; total weight gain and performance index values of growing NZW rabbits compared to the control group. No mortality rate was recorded with increasing papaya latex (0.07 and 0.09%).Whereas, total feed intake significantly decreased with papaya latex (0.07 and 0.09%) inclusion. Significant variations were found for the digestion coefficient of DM, CP, CF, TDN and DE due to supplementation with papaya latex. The lowest value of pH (5.50), lowest count of E.coli (553.5x10 CFU) and anaerobic bacteria (4.50x10 CFU) were recorded with rabbits fed low CP diet supplemented with papaya latex (0.09%). Such treatment also increased significantly (P≤0.05) dressing percentage, carcass weight and internal organs weight. Effect of crude papaya (Carica papaya) latex supplementation to low protein diets on productive performance, digestion, immune system, activity of certain digestive enzymes and intestinal morphology of growing rabbits.

The effects of decreasing levels of crude protein (CP) and enzymatic supplementation on production performance of growing rabbits were studied. In a completely randomized design 54 weaned New Zealand White rabbits were divided in four groups of 11 rabbits each and one group of 10 rabbits. The treatment groups fed on diets with 17, 16, 15 or 14% of CP supplemented with 0.05% of enzymatic complex (VEGPROO ) with cellulase and protease activities. The control group received a diet with 17% of CP without the enzymatic complex. The animals fed 14 and 15% CP diets showed better growth performance with a significant effect of the protein level (P<0.05) of the diet on final body weight, final metabolic body weight, daily weight gain, daily feed intake, daily CP intake, and feed conversion. The reduction of CP level of the diet up to 14%, supplemented with enzymatic complex, and corrected to essential aminoacids levels, did not show negative effects on the evaluated traits.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion, carcass weight and carcass yield of rabbits fed on diets supplemented with increasing levels of an enzyme complex (Vegproâ) of protease and cellulase activities. Seventy-five New Zealand White rabbits were weaned by 40 days of age, being separated at random into 5 treatments, according to the level of enzyme supplementation: A-0.,00; B-0.05; C-0.10; D-0.15 and 0.20%. No significant difference (P<0.05) was observed among treatments for feed intake and daily gain. For feed conversion the only significant (P<0,05) difference was between control and treatment B. Carcass weight were significantly (P<0.05) heavier for animal under diet B (0.05% enzimatic complex) whereas carcass yield did not experience any enzimatic effect.
