Elemental analysis of rice husk ash using X-ray fluorescence technique.

The methods of X-ray analysis, infrared spectroscopy, differential thermal analysis and scanning electron microscopy were used in this study. The objects of the experiments were rice husk obtained during processing of rice, variety Krasnodarski 424. The rice husk was burnt in air and in non-oxygen medium at several burning temperatures. The color of the oxidized product was stipulated by the burning temperature. The X-ray analysis showed that the amorphous SiO2 present in the rice husk begins to crystallize in the form of α-cristobalite at 850°C. Using differential thermal analysis, the thermal destruction of rice husk was studied in air and nitrogen media and the initial and final temperatures of the process were determined. The silica distribution was examined by scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopic techniques.

Effect of rice husk ash on properties of aluminium alloys: A review

Thermal processing of a rice husk sol in air at T≥750°C leads to the phase transformation of amorphous silicon dioxide (SiO2) into crystobalite (type B samples). Thermal treatment of the same sol at T≈ 1400 °C in a closed graphite crucible leads to the formation of a mixture comprising hexagonal SiC phases and graphite (type A samples). Unannealed type A samples showed high refractory properties, being stable up to 1650°C. Using kaolin binder in silicon carbide articles leads to a decrease in the material refractoriness.

Silicon carbide materials obtained from rice husk

A technology for producing decorative construction ceramics — red tiles with different tones based on red-burning clay — has been developed. Complex additives consisting of production wastes (aluminum-cobalt-molybdenum catalysts) and wollastonite, which contain color-carrying, strengthening, and sinter-improving oxides, were used. This makes it possible not only to activate the sintering process but also obtain construction ceramic in a wide range of colors as well as to solve the problem of recycling production wastes and expanding the raw materials resources for manufacturing ceramic articles.

Prospects for expanding the raw materials resources for ceramic production

The preparation of lightweight dinas refractories based on the calcined ash of rice husk (90% SiO2) is reported. The properties of refractories of different phase compositions (sintering expansion, open porosity, density, and compressive strength) are measured. The rice husk ash can be recommended as an alternative to the conventional additive in the industrial production of high-quality lightweight dinas refractories.

Lightweight Dinas Refractories Based on Rice Husk Ash

The possibility of using pyroxene skarn from the Koitashskoe ore field for production of glass ceramic materials is discussed and crystallization specifics of its melt is investigated. A material of a prescribed mono-mineral pyroxene composition is obtained. Sintered glass ceramics based on it have high acid resistance (99.3%) and bending strength of 82 MPa.

Glass Ceramic Materials Based on Basalt Rocks from the Koitashskoe Ore Field

The results are presented from a study on enhancing the range in which pyrocerams based on cordierite glass powders synthesized with concentrated radiation fluxes are sintered. The process was carried out using crystallization catalysts, as well as feldspar and zinc oxide. It was determined that the injection of zinc oxide allows one to lower the sintering temperature by 10–20°C and to expand the interval of sintering from 15 to 30°C.
