It is suggested that recent advances on process modelling tools and computer hardware enable Design Simulators (DS) to be used to some degree as Process Training Simulators (PTS). PTS thus obtained are termed, 'Models Forwards from Design Simulators' (MFDS). Their training capabilities are compared to Full Scale Simulators (FSS) that are a more traditional and complete form ofPTS. In comparison with FSS, MFDS will very likely have reduced simulator functionality and less coverage of the operation range but they can be obtained at almost no further expenditure. They also offer some advantages e.g. in retaining the same model fidelity as design and in avoidance of information transfer problems from design project to PTS project. NIFDS offer a great potential to expand training usage in the mainstream chemical industry. Traditionally PTS have been considered separately from other modelling on projects for design and operation e.g. flowsheet development and modelling, optimisation and control system analysis. This distinction is particularly marked for the FSS type of PTS.

A real-time dynamic two-phase model of the pipeline system and relevant portions of shore facilities is being installed for Woodside Offshore Petroleum Pty. Ltd.'s North West Shelf gas project. The trunkline management system (TMS) which utilizes dynamic pipeline and plant process simulation is scheduled to start up near the end of the first quarter of 1994 at Woodside Offshore's plant at Karratha, Western Australia. The TMS is a real-time dynamic two-phase model of the pipeline system and relevant portions of the onshore facilities. Its budget was approximately $4 million (Australian).
