The design and implementation of a software based gain control for EDFAs used in long-haul optical networks

We have demonstrated the performance improvement of L-band hybrid remote Erbium-doped fiber amplifier by introducing a phase modulator to suppress the stimulated Brilloiun scattering (SBS) effect in the transmission. The transmission gain has improved by 12.65dB while the noise figure has reduced by 47.1dB when 0dBm signal power is generated at 1590.05nm wavelength. Furthermore, the optical signal-to-noise ratio has improved from 7.81dB to 29.72dB when the signal power is varied from -30dBm to 0dBm. By implementing a phase modulator to the input signal somehow able to produce better performance regarding gain, noise figure and optical signal-to-noise ratio, especially at the higher signal power as the gain, has been transferred to the Stokes signal and the amplified signal.

Improving MDM–WDM optical network performance via optimized power allocation using Gaussian noise model

In this study, the performance of a forward pumped erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) which is suitable to be used as a preamplifer in fiber optical communication systems is analyzed experimentally regarding the dependece of its performance on exact pumping wavelength at 980 nm region. The gain and noise figure (NF) characteristics of an EDF preamplifier is obtained for the pump laser wavelengths of 974 nm and 976 nm having different absorption cross sections. It has been shown that the experimental gain and NF characteristics are consistent with the absorption spectrum of the erbium doped fiber used. Furthermore, we report 1–2 dB variation in gain and NF performance of EDFA in response to a nanometer change at pump wavelength. As a result, in designing a forward pumped EDFA with a high gain and a low NF performance, the exact wavelength of the pump laser used should be very closed to the peak absorption wavelength of EDF.

The effect of pump laser wavelength at 980 nm band on the performance of EDFA

In this study, conventional band (C band) erbium doped fibre amplifiers (EDFA) and long band (L band) EDFAs are analyzed to obtain better flat gain characteristics. For this purpose, three C band EDFA and two L band EDFA configurations are established. The effects of the fibre Bragg grating (FBG), gain flattening filter (GFF), two stage system, optical feedback loop, and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) reflection techniques are observed in these configurations.
