An automatic weld line following method for use with an arc welding method of welding a work by feeding a consumable electrode toward the weld line of the work through the tip of a welding torch and by oscillating the welding torch. The average and effective values of a welding current are detected, even if they are different, and fed to a computer so that the distance between the tip and the work is automatically controlled. At the same time, the oscillation angle is controlled to be symmetric at all times with respect of the weld line.

The groove, which has a predetermined shape, is subjected to arc welding with predetermined welding speed and feed rate of the welding wire so that, when a half period of the reciprocating movement of the electrode is complete, the travel of the electrode in the direction of the height is integrated over time in order to obtain a cross-sectional area (So) which is described by the electrode, and in addition a reciprocating-movement stroke (Xo) performed by the electrode is obtained, and the cross-sectional area (So) and the reciprocating-movement stroke (Xo) are thus stored. When the next half period is complete, a cross-sectional area (S) and a reciprocating-movement stroke (X) are obtained in the same way so that the welding speed or the feed rate of the welding wire is changed and the cross-sectional area of the metal deposit is thereby changed to an extent ( DELTA S) which is established by the following equation The deposit rate is controlled in accordance with the actual cross-sectional area of the groove and a welding bead of uniform height is thus produced.

A magnetically moved arc can be used for open seams; and the process can be automated.
