Journal ArticleDOI
High prevalence of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy in villages in Maridi County, Republic of South Sudan: A community-based survey.
Robert Colebunders,Jane Y. Carter,Peter Claver Olore,Kai Puok,Samit Bhattacharyya,Sonia Menon,Gasim Abd-Elfarag,Morrish Ojok,Chellafe Ensoy-Musoro,Richard Lako,Makoy Yibi Logora +10 more
TL;DR: An epilepsy prevalence of 4.4% was observed in villages in Maridi, which is a major risk factor for epilepsy and Ivermectin coverage needs to increase to prevent onchocerciasis associated epilepsy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Clinical characteristics of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy in villages in Maridi County, Republic of South Sudan.
Robert Colebunders,Gasim Abd-Elfarag,Jane Y. Carter,Peter Claver Olore,Kai Puok,Sonia Menon,Joseph Nelson Fodjo Siewe,Samit Bhattacharyya,Morrish Ojok,Richard Lako,Makoy Yibi Logora +10 more
TL;DR: The high percentage of PWE who met the diagnostic criteria for OAE suggests that better onchocerciasis control could prevent new cases, and urgent action is needed to close the anti-epileptic treatment gap.
Journal ArticleDOI
Onchocerca volvulus is not detected in the cerebrospinal fluid of persons with onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy
An Hotterbeekx,Stephen Raimon,Gasim Abd-Elfarag,Jane Y. Carter,Wilson Sebit,Abozer Suliman,Joseph Nelson Siewe Fodjo,Peter de Witte,Makoy Yibi Logora,Robert Colebunders,Samir Kumar-Singh +10 more
TL;DR: Onchocerca volvulus microfilariae were not detected in the cerebrospinal fluid and may be mediated by an (auto-immune mechanism) mechanism in onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Persons with onchocerciasis‐associated epilepsy and nodding seizures have a more severe form of epilepsy with more cognitive impairment and higher levels of Onchocerca volvulus infection
Gasim Abd-Elfarag,Jane Y. Carter,Stephen Raimon,Wilson Sebit,Abozer Suliman,Joseph Nelson Siewe Fodjo,Peter Claver Olore,Kai Puok Biel,Morrish Ojok,Makoy Yibi Logora,Robert Colebunders +10 more
TL;DR: PWE with nodding seizures have a more severe form of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy, with earlier seizure onset and higher levels of O. volvulus infection.
Journal ArticleDOI
The effect of bi-annual community-directed treatment with ivermectin on the incidence of epilepsy in onchocerciasis endemic villages in South Sudan: a study protocol
Gasim Abd-Elfarag,Makoy Yibi Logora,Jane Y. Carter,Morrish Ojok,Jackson Songok,Sonia Menon,Ferdinand W. N. M. Wit,Richard Lako,Robert Colebunders +8 more
TL;DR: This study is the first population-based study to evaluate the effect of bi-annual CDTi to reduce the incidence of nodding syndrome, and if the study demonstrates such a reduction, these findings are expected to motivate communities in onchocerciasis-endemic regions to participate in CDTi, and will encourage policy makers, funders and other stakeholders to increase their efforts to eliminate onchokerciases.
