Encounter Groups: First Facts

Conflict is a common phenomenon in interactions both between individuals, and between groups of individuals. As computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) is concerned with the design of systems to support such interactions, an examination of conflict, and the various ways of dealing with it, would clearly be of benefit. This chapter surveys the literature that is most relevant to the CSCW community, covering many disciplines that have addressed particular aspects of conflict.

A Survey of Empirical Studies of Conflict

A meta-analysis tested the effectiveness of psychological treatments for child maltreatment (CM) using weighted least squares methods (e.g., L. V. Hedges & I. Olkin, 1985). A mean effect size of d 0.54 (SE .03, 95% CI .39– .69) was observed, indicating that on average, treated participants were better off than 71% of those in control groups. Partitioning by type and target of outcome assessment yielded homogeneous effects within each of 5 different outcomes. Treatment effects were weakest when linked to objective behavioral observations of the family (d .21) and strongest when associated with parent self-reported parenting attitudes and behaviors (d .53). Results of other moderator analyses are presented, along with limitations of current CM treatment research; implications for future research, practice, and social policy are discussed.

Effectiveness of psychological interventions for child maltreatment: a meta-analysis

SUMMARY This article is based upon an analysis of 95 experimental, quasi-experimental, pre experimental and client-opinion studies of the effectiveness of social work. Three-quarters of these screened studies show positive results within their different methodological con ventions. An examination is made of which methods and patterns of helping are correlated with positive outcomes and the implications for practice, training, and management explored.

Contemporary Studies of the Effectiveness of Social Work

This article considers the development of violence with particular reference to family factors in violence such as the quality of the parent-child relationship. In taking a developmental approach to violence, a link is established between the maltreatment of children in an attachment context and the risk of violence via the child's capacity to envision mental states in the other. Evidence from epidemiology and neuroscience is brought to bear on this link. Finally, some studies of prevention of violence that are likely to enhance attachment and mentalizing are considered.

Early-life trauma and the psychogenesis and prevention of violence.

The development of both group process and group task accomplishment is an in tegral part of the function of most groups. This study examines both process and task factors, exploring their relationship to group member satisfaction. The authors also suggest implications for practice indicated by the findings.
