What is disclosed is a process for preparing R' 3 SiNH-containing silazane polymers by contacting and reacting chlorine-containing disilanes with {R' 3 Si} 2 NH where R' is vinyl, hydrogen, an alkyl radical of 1-3 carbon atoms or the phenyl group. The silazane polymers are useful as chemical intermediates to produce silicon-containing chemical compounds. They are also useful in the formation of silicon carbide-containing ceramic materials.

Process for the preparation of poly(disilyl)silazane polymers and the polymers therefrom

A method is described for making a shaped silicon carbide-silicon matrix composite. A confined carbon fiber preform is infiltrated with sufficient molten silicon metal at a temperature in the range of from about 1400° C. to about 1800° C. in an inert atmosphere or vacuum. Silicon carbide powder can also be incorporated in the preform structure.

A seal for use between an annular combustor and a turbine nozzle, disposed downstream of the combustor, is provided with means for effectively innerconnecting the combustor with a sidewall surrounding the nozzle. The sidewall includes an upstream extending radially projecting flange and the combustor includes an axially projecting downstream extending flange. The seal includes means for frictionally engaging each of these flanges and retaining them in a sealing relationship while permitting axial and radial frictional sliding motion therebetween. In addition, the present invention provides means for passing cooling air from a surrounding plenum through the seal in a cooling fashion to a pocket formed between the combustor-associated flange and a film-promoting lip which comprises a portion of the combustor liner.

Turbine shroud thermal distortion control

A hollow thermally-conditioned turbine stator nozzle 12 is set forth to distribute and guide combustion gases from a forward inlet 15 to the turbine rotor blades 18. The nozzle includes a plurality of vanes 20 arranged annularly in the turbine. Each vane 20 has a body 22 to guide the fluid, the body being supported by outer and inner ends 34,64. The outer and inner ends each have a forward lug 44,74 and a rear lug 46,76. A floating support is provided for the vanes and includes forward shoulders 110,136 to engage the forward lugs and prevent rearward movement of the vanes and rear shoulders 114,142 having notches 116,144 to receive and confine the tangential movement of the vanes. Each vane also includes a hollow core 152 to pass a portion of fluid and reduce thermal stresses on the vane. The vane is preferably made of silicon nitride ceramic.

Hollow, thermally-conditioned, turbine stator nozzle

An aerofoil member for static operation in a gas turbine engine is provided with a shroud and root, one of which has a concave supporting surface formed thereon and the other a convex supporting surface thereon. Both of the surfaces are on that end of the member which faces downstream in operation. Such an aerofoil member is relieved of major bending and tensile loads thereby enabling it to be constructed from ceramic materials.

Stator assembly for gas turbine engines which accommodate circumferential and axial expansion of engine components

A method of producing an injection moulded silicon carbide article comprises charging a chamber with a mix of alpha silicon carbide, graphite and a binder thereof, injecting the mix from the chamber into a mould, removing the mix from the mould, reheating the moulded mix so as to remove the binder and finally heating the finished moulded mix in a vacuum or inert atmosphere in the presence of molten silicon so as to absorb the silicon which reacts with the graphite to form beta silicon carbide and so obtain final densification of the finished moulded article.
