Deterrent ammunition, including a projectile of soft elastic rupturable material, such as natural or synthetic rubber or plastic, having a charge of flowable material, such as finely divided particulate or powder, carried in a cross-sectionally polygonal cavity having relatively thin longitudinal rupture wall zones along the corners of the cavity and thicker longitudinal strengthening zones bounding the cavity straight wall surface sections, with a generally ogive-forming nose section having an easily flexible annular wall connecting with a thicker and more rigid piston-forming nose end of lesser lateral cross-section than the interior cavity cross-section at the rear end of the flexible annular wall for ease of rearward piston movement of the piston-forming nose end on target impact. The projectile is carried in a cartridge by a bore-riding segmented sabot of low density, low mass material and is ejected from the cartridge by ignition of propellant in the cartridge, which effects gas pressure on an obturating pusher disc engaging with the rear of the segmented sabot.

A non-lethal projectile and launcher therefor for riot control and the like comprising a body formed from a relatively soft, pliant latex material compressed to projectile form and mounted within a restraining cup which in turn is mounted in a firing shell. The body at its rearward end includes retracted guidance structure that extends on the projectile being fired, a chamber at its forward end to receive a marking fluid for marking the target, and internal subdivisions in its mid portion designed to permit the body to expand laterally on impacting into a soft textured mass that flattens on impact to avoid injury to the target. The projectile launcher is in the form of a barrel assembly including a bell shaped muzzle which permits the projectile to be fired without jamming even when held against the target and braking slots for discharging the propelling gases rearwardly of the launcher to reduce recoil.

For use in marking nighttime impacts from easily ruptured paintball type projectiles that are fired from compressed air guns; this invention provides a double chamber projectile capsule that contains two chemical agents which, when mixed together on impact, provide a luminescent spot to visibly mark impacts at night; for police and military training, as well as the popular adult war games, based on the present paint ball and air gun equipment. The unique modifications are designed to fit into the present standardized paintball specifications, without adding unusual expense. A double barrier feature assures necessary shelf life and complete separation of the reactive agents; as well as increased ease of loading the two chemical agents during manufacture.

Luminescent paintball for marking nighttime impacts

A system for identifying a hard target from a distance. A delivery vehicle, such as a missile or bomb, is adapted to be dropped from the air. The delivery vehicle contains a plurality of hard target identifier or kinetic penetrator elements. Each of the elements has a nose portion of aerodynamic shape and a plurality of fins connected thereto. When ejected from the delivery vehicle, the elements will reach a substantial velocity, and hence, kinetic energy to penetrate partially into a hard target. A soft surrounding area, such as earth or water will absorb the elements. The elements may be passive for reflecting waves, such as acoustic waves or electromagnetic energy. Alternatively, they may be active elements capable of ejecting a dye, such as a fluorescent dye, or for transmitting acoustical or electromagnetic energy upon being activated.
