An electronically steered weather radar system comprises a plurality of transmit/receive modules, a plurality of antenna modules, and a system signal processor. Each transmit/receive module may be configured to adjust a phase characteristic of a radio frequency (RF) signal to be transmitted and received. Antenna modules may be in communication with transmit/receive modules and may form an antenna array configured to transmit a system beam in a direction determined by the phase of the RF signal from each transmit/receive module and to generate the RF signal from the received system beam. The system signal processor may be configured to perform a first scan to detect meteorological formations wherein the system signal processor communicates with each transmit/receive module to adjust a phase characteristic of the RF signals such that the antenna array transmits and receives the system beam through a plurality of azimuth angles and a plurality of elevation angles.

The present invention provides an improved antenna system that, in one embodiment, includes an antenna array comprised of a plurality of elements, each of which is capable of providing a signal. Also included in the improved antenna system is, a multi-beam beamformer for producing two spatially independent overlapping beams from the signals provided by two different subsets of the antenna array. The phase of the two beams is compared to realize an interferometer that can provide high or fine resolution data on the position of an object relative to the antenna system. The amplitude of the two beams can also be compared to obtain coarse data on the position of the object. The beamformer includes a switching network for selecting which elements of the antenna array form the two subsets. This permits, for example, the position of the beams to moved, the baseline of the two beams to be varied, and/or the beam width of the beams to be altered. To reduce adverse aerodynamic effects in certain applications, the antenna array is located conformal to the exterior surface of the body on which the array is mounted. Further, to reduce temperature related problems associated with high speed movement of the body on which the array is located, the array is located on the side of the body, as opposed to the front of the body. The side location also provides space for other types of sensors that are preferably located adjacent to the front surface of the body.

A method of forming overlapping antenna subarrays includes forming one or more first-level subarrays by combing multiple elements. Each first-level subarray may have a phase center. One or more second-level subarrays may be formed by arranging a number of the first-level subarrays to form each first-level subarray. One or more third-level subarrays may be formed by arranging a number of the second-level subarrays to form each second-level subarray. The first-level, second-level, and third-level subarrays may include overlapping antenna subarrays. Each element may include an antenna element. Some of the first level, second-level, or third level subarrays may have an interlocking feature that allows interlocking of each subarray with another one of the same subarray. Arranging subarrays may include interlocking subarrays.

Interlocking subarray configurations

An antenna for transmitting or receiving, for limited fine scan or wide angle scan, or for producing multiple beams has a plurality antenna radiators or receivers (apertures) in a linear array, coupled to a smaller plurality of antenna networks so that many of the antenna apertures are coupled to two of the networks and the networks are all coupled to a common transmission line. For a spatial scanning system, each network is coupled to the common transmission line through a variable phase shifter so that the radiation patterns of the apertures combine to define a beacon of predetermined fine pointing direction that can be used to spatially sweep a sector by varying the phase shifters according to a predetermined schedule. Furthermore, by shifting the point of feed to the networks, the pointing direction is caused to switch in relatively large steps, from one sector to another sector.
