The effect of austenitizing temperature on both the plane strain fracture toughness,KIC, and the microstructure of AISI 4340 was studied. Austenitizing temperatures of 870 and 1200°C were employed. All specimens austenitized at 1200°C were furnace cooled from the higher austenitizing temperature and then oil quenched from 870°C. Transmission electron microscopy revealed an apparent large increase in the amount of retained austen-ite present in the specimens austenitized at the higher temperature. Austenitizing at 870°C resulted in virtually no retained austenite; only minor amounts were found sparsely scat-tered in those areas examined. A considerably altered microstructure was observed in specimens austenitized at 1200°C. Fairly continuous 100 to 200A thick films of retained austenite were observed between the martensite laths throughout most of the area exam-ined. Additionally, specimens austenitized at 870°C contained twinned martensite plates while those austenitized at 1200°C showed no twinning. Plane strain fracture toughness measurements exhibited an approximate 80 pct increase in toughness for specimens austen-itized at 1200°C compared to those austenitized at 870°C. The yield strength was unaffected by austenitizing temperature. The possible role of retained austenite and the elimination of twinned martensite in the enhancement of the fracture toughness of those specimens austen-itized at the higher temperature will be discussed.

The effect of austenitizing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties of as-quenched 4340 steel

Analysis of published data demonstrates that the start temperatures of bainite (Bs) and martensite (Ms) formation exhibit an exponential carbon dependence. Empirical models are proposed to describe this specific carbon dependence. The models are relatively simple and sufficiently accurate for conventional steels with 0·1–1·9 wt-% carbon and less than 7 wt-% in total of other alloying elements. Predictions of the Bs and Ms temperatures show a better accuracy than those obtained with equations from literature. An improved prediction of the Ms temperature is important to accurately determine of the amount of martensite at a certain arrest temperature using the Koistinen and Marburger (KM) equation. Dependence of martensite start temperature on fine austenite grain size

The aim of the investigation is to test existing M/sub s/ formulae with measured M/sub s/-composition data collected over the past 15 years in alloy design programs at Berkeley. The maximum total composition of alloying elements is about 21 wt pct, and the maximum individual elemental compositions are 0.5 pct C, 12.2 pct Cr, 2.1 pct Mn, 12.5 pct Ni, 4.2 pct Mo, 3.2 pct Si, and 9 pct Co. These values are beyond the composition limit allowed by existing formulae. However, this investigation involves examining the validity of predicting M/sub s/ temperatures in the high alloy as well as low alloy range. 33 refs.

AN EXAMINATION OF THE VALIDITY OF EXISTING EMPIRICAL FORMULAE FOR THE CALCULATION OF Ms TEMPERATURE

In order to elucidate roles of dislocations and grain boundaries in martensite nucleation, the transformation temperature (Ms) of specimens austenitized at various temperatures and subjected to prestrain has been measured, using Fe-Ni, Fe-Ni-C, and Fe-Cr-C alloys. It is concluded that the plastic accommodation, in austenite, of the shape strain of the transforming martensite is a vital step in the nucleation event. Any factors impeding such plastic accommodation, such as the lack of dislocations, work hardening, and grain refinement, suppress the transformation. Contrary to the general belief, dislocations themselves do not act as favorable nucleation sites. Grain boundaries provide nucleation site, but only certain types of grain boundaries are qualified to be potential nuclei. A quantitative analysis shows that the increasing difficulty for the plastic accommodation with decreasing grain size is the main factor to depress Ms in fine-grained specimens.

Roles of dislocations and grain boundaries in martensite nucleation

The resistance of austenite to plastic deformation (austenite flow stress) was measured using a high temperature tensile apparatus. The flow stress was then correlated with the Ms temperature as determined magnetically during subsequent cooling. In one part of the study, the flow stress of the austenite was varied only by work hardening the austenite, allowing the austenite composition, which is known to affect Ms, to be held constant. A decrease in Ms temperature with increasing austenite flow stress was observed. This observation was supported by the observation of a decrease in the amount of austenite transformed at 25°C. In the other part of the study, a series of alloy steels of different chemical compositions was tested. A decrease in Ms temperature with increasing austenite flow stress was again observed. Strengthening of austenite by plastic deformation was shown not to change the chemical driving force for transformation. The effect of deformation on Ms temperature thus results from its influence on either the nucleation or the growth process. While the effect of austenite deformation on martensite nucleation is uncertain, specific nucleation models can account for only approximately one-third of the nonchemical free energy change which accompanies transformation. A proposal, consistent with the observations, was made that the energy expended for the deformation of austenite during martensite plate growth could reasonably account for a substantial part of the nonchemical free energy change.
