Die mündlich-persönliche Beratung hat in so vielen Bereichen des mittelalterlichen Lebens eine Zentralfunktion, daß es eigentlich verwundert, warum sie nicht zu den vorrangigen Themen mediävistischer Forschung gehört. Hier sollen nur stichwortartig einige dieser Bereiche genannt werden, um danach vor allem Beratungen im politischen Kräftefeld — und hier besonders zwischen König und Großen — zum Gegenstand der Untersuchung zu machen. Dies, um exemplarisch zu zeigen, wie wichtig das Verständnis der Formen und Regeln der Beratung für den Einblick in die Funktionsweisen mittelalterlicher Herrschäftsverbände und damit für zentrale Probleme der mittelalterlichen Verfassungsgeschichte ist. Für die königliche Herrschaftsausübung konstitutiv waren die Hoftage, zu denen die Großen des Reiches nicht zuletzt kamen, um durch ihren Rat an den anstehenden Entscheidungen mitzuwirken. Neben den Hoftagen kennt die königliche Herrschaftspraxis eine Fülle anderer Colloquien, etwa vor dem Abschluß von Bündnissen mit anderen Herrschern, aber auch im Falle von Konflikten innerhalb des eigenen Herrschaftsverbandes.
