Methods and apparatus to deploy fiber optic based access networks are disclosed. An example access network comprises a first fiber optic cable segment to couple an optical access head-end to a first pedestal and to transport user data, a second fiber optic cable segment to couple the first pedestal to a second pedestal and to transport a first portion of the user data to the second pedestal, a drop cable segment to couple the first pedestal to a customer premises and to transport a second portion of the user data to the customer premises, and a switch at the first pedestal to route the first portion of the user data between the first and second fiber optic cable segments and to route the second portion of the user data between the first fiber optic cable segment and the drop cable segment.

Methods and apparatus to deploy fiber optic based access networks

An optical network unit (ONU) is installed to communicate with an optical line terminal (OLT) located at a remote terminal (RT). The ONU includes a first subscriber downlink interface to serve a first subscriber premises and a second subscriber downlink interface to serve a second subscriber premises. The RT is located apart from a central office (CO) and in communication with the CO. A first removably attachable subscriber downlink module is communicatively coupled to the first subscriber downlink interface. A second removably attachable subscriber downlink module is communicatively coupled to the second subscriber downlink interface. The first removably attachable subscriber downlink module is replaced with a third removably attachable subscriber downlink module. An optical transmission medium is connected between the third removably attachable subscriber downlink module and the first subscriber premises while retaining a second electrically conductive medium communicatively coupled to the second subscriber downlink interface.

Example methods and apparatus to implement communication networks using electrically conductive and optical communication media are disclosed. An example method involves receiving first communication information via a conductive communication medium and second communication information via a first optical fiber communication medium. The first communication information and the second communication information are multiplexed to form a multiplexed communication signal. The multiplexed communication signal is communicated via a second optical fiber communication medium to a subscriber distribution device.

Example distributed DSLAMs to increase bandwidth in access networks are disclosed. An example DSLAM comprises a first distribution cable segment to couple an SAI to a first pedestal and to transport user data, a second distribution cable segment to couple the first pedestal to a second pedestal and to transport a first portion of the user data from the first pedestal to the second pedestal, the second cable segment comprising a pair of DSL-based signals bonded together, a drop cable to couple the first pedestal to a customer premises and to transport a second portion of the user data to the customer premises, and a switch at the first pedestal to route the first portion of the user data between the first and second cable segments and to route the second portion of the user data between the first cable segment and the drop cable.

Distributed digital subscriber line access multiplexers to increase bandwidth in access networks

A read port for selectively coupling one of a plurality of inputs to an output is disclosed. The read port comprises: a plurality of inputs; an output; a plurality of multiplexers operable to selectively couple a selected input to said output; and a multiplexer control signal input for inputting a multiplexer control signal, the multiplexer control signal comprising a plurality of control parameters and being operable to control switching of the plurality of multiplexers. The plurality of multiplexers are arranged in a plurality of layers, the layers being arranged between the inputs and output, such that a selected input is operable to be coupled to the output via a multiplexer from each of the different layers. Furthermore, some of the layers are divided into portions, each portion having at least one control parameter input, so that each of the portions is operable to be controlled by a different one of the control parameters and multiplexers in one of the portions of a certain layers can be switched without switching multiplexers in another of the portions this layer. In some embodiments two outputs operable as two read ports are provided.

To provide a high bit rate link between telecommunication network users, HDSL modems are installed on the user premises and at corresponding subscriber line termination units in an exchange. The modems in the exchange are connected to access units of the exchange which include networks of add and drop multiplexers interconnected in a ring and connected to a drop port. It is shown that it is a simple matter to organize dynamic switching between users connected to the same access unit or neighboring access units in the same exchange. Other calls are routed to other exchanges.
