We present a revision of the hierarchical, modular Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) modeling formalism. The revision distinguishes between transition collisions and ordinary external events in the external transition function of DEVS models. Such separation enables us to extend the modeling capability of the collisions. The revision also does away with the necessity for tie-breaking of simultaneously scheduled events, as embodied in the select function. The latter is replaced by a well-defined and consistent formal construct that allows all transitions to be simultaneously activated. The revision provides a modeler with both conceptual and parallel execution benefits.

Parallel DEVS: a parallel, hierarchical, modular, modeling formalism

SHIFT is a programming language for the specification and simulation of dynamic networks of hybrid automata. Such systems consist of components which can be created, interconnected and destroyed as the system evolves. Components exhibit hybrid behavior, consisting of continuous-time phases separated by discrete-event transitions. Components may evolve independently, or they may interact through their inputs, outputs and exported events. The interaction network itself may evolve.

SHIFT: A Formalism and a Programming Language for Dynamic Networks of Hybrid Automata

SHIFT is a programming language for describing and simulating dynamic networks of hybrid automata. Such Systems consist of components that can be created, interconnected and destroyed as the system evolves. Components exhibit hybrid behavior, consisting of continuous-time phases separated by discrete-event transitions. Components may evolve independently, or they may interact through selected state variables and events. The interaction network itself may evolve. SHIFT is currently used in two applications: automated highway Systems and coordinated submarine Systems. The SHIFT model offers the proper level of abstraction for describing these and other applications such as air traffic control Systems and robotic shop-floors whose dynamic reconfigurations cannot be captured easily by conventional models. We have implemented a Compiler and a run-time system for SHIFT. The Compiler translates a SHIFT program into a C program, which, when run, simulates the design specified in the SHIFT source program. The SHIFT Programming Language and Run-time System for Dynamic Networks of Hybrid Automata

A parallel discrete-event simulation (DEVS) formalism which exploits the parallelism of transition collisions in the simulation of DEVS models is considered. We present a design for the abstract simulator needed to prove the formalism's soundness and to serve as a reference for implementation. The abstract simulator is composed of cooperating simulation engines, (simulators and coordinators) that use bag-like messages to synchronize the parallel activities that are distributed across autonomous asynchronous processors. The approach suggests engines that are efficient in both sequential and distributed/parallel environments. After describing the abstract simulator we briefly discuss a prototype implementation that affords a high degree of flexibility by mechanizing the "closure under coupling" property of the parallel DEVS formalism and the characteristics of object-oriented systems. >

Abstract simulator for the parallel DEVS formalism

The paper presents the realization of an object-oriented kernel of a new modeling and simulation environment. The kernel system stands out as it is based on systems theoretical concepts and facilitates combined discrete-continuous, modular, hierarchical modeling. Its implementation language is the AI language Common Lisp and its object-oriented superset CLOS. The kernel system serves as the basis for a knowledge-based modeling and simulation environment supporting interactive modeling and simulation and automatic model construction.

An environment for DEVS-based multiformalism simulation in Common Lisp/CLOS

Comneon, as the software branch of Infineon Technologies, provides APOXI for development of mobile system software solutions. APOXI is a fullfledged C++-implemented application framework which provides rich functionality and a defined extension, adaptation, and customization scheme to realize mobile software solutions. Based on APOXI, mobile phone manufacturers realize their software solutions for mobile handsets in a multi-stage adaptation and customization process.

Due to complexity and diversity of today's mobile software solutions, an increased demand for an easier customization process has been observed which led to the development of the Aragon tool. Aragon is an Eclipse-based interactive and graphical GUI builder tool for customization of man machine interfaces. This paper describes requirements, design, and architecture of the Aragon tool. Starting with an overview of the mobile system domain and development process and, from that, deriving requirements for a builder tool, the paper outlines the main design decisions taken and the resulting architecture of the Aragon tool, which distinguishes it significantly from comparable systems.
