Block copolyestercarbonates substantially free of anhydride linkages linking at least two mers of the polymer chain may be prepared by a method which comprises the steps of: (A) preparing a hydroxy-terminated polyester intermediate in a molten reaction mixture comprising at least one 1,3-dihydroxybenzene moiety and at least one aromatic dicarboxylic acid diarylester under transesterification conditions, said polyester intermediate having a degree of polymerization of at least 4; and (B) conducting a reaction of said polyester intermediate with a carbonate precursor in a two-phase system comprising an aqueous phase and a water-immiscible organic solvent. Articles comprising the copolyestercarbonates are another aspect of the invention.

An apparatus and method for producing fatty acid alkyl esters from fatty acids derived from vegetable oils and animal fats with an alkaline solution dissolved in stoichiometric or near stoichiometric levels of a monoalkyl alcohol to form a mixture. The method further comprises emulsifying the mixture as a means to reach a completed chemical reaction state in a reactor section, wherein the oils or fats are transesterified into fatty acid alkyl esters. The transesterification occurs when the natural boundary surfaces of the immiscible mixture are enlarged by ultrasonic cavitation in the reaction section and the transesterification is performed at, or near atmospheric pressure. The method finally includes, after reaching the chemical reaction state, separating residues from the fatty acid alkyl ester in a gravitational phase separation section.

The invention relates to a process for making a high molecular weight pre-gel for a cross-linked branched polyester comprising: a) reacting polyester precursor repeat units via condensation polymerization in a continuous or semi-continuous, or batch reactor stage to form a low molecular weight pre-gel; and b) further reacting the low molecular weight pre-gel via condensation polymerization in a continuous thin-film reactive vacuum processing stage to form a high molecular weight pre-gel.

A gum base comprising a crosslinked branched polyester gel prepared from the process comprising: a) providing a first pre-gel composition having carboxyl end groups; b) providing a second pre-gel composition having hydroxyl end groups; c) removing either or both of the first and second pre-gel compositions from their respective reactors; d) combining the first and second pre-gel compositions to form a mixture; and e) processing the mixture in an extruder, a continuous processor, or a container thereby providing a crosslinked branched polyester gel.

Linear aromatic polyesters of bisphenols and dicarboxylic compounds are prepared by transesterification polymerization in either a fully continuous process or in a semi-continuous process wherein a first stage is conducted batchwise and a second stage is conducted in a continuous manner wherein the second stage employs a wiped film reactor, alternatively, a wiped film reactor followed by a vented extrusion reactor. The processes are preferably conducted in the presence of a catalyst in liquid form, and further under conditions wherein the catalyst is introduced to the polymerization concurrent with the introduction of liquid phase reactants to avoid substantial heating of the reactants in contact with the catalyst prior to onset of the transesterification reaction. The products of the processes have an unexpectedly low polydispersity.
