Disclosed is a system and method for generating text from a voice input that divides the processing of each speech event into a dictation event and a text event. Each dictation event handles the processing of data relating to the input into the system, and each text event deals with the generation of text from the inputted voice signals. In order to easily distinguish the dictation events from each other and text events from each other the system and method creates a data structure for storing certain information relating to each individual event. Such data structures enable the system and method to process both simple spoken words as well as spoken commands and to provide the necessary text generation in response to the spoken words or to execute an appropriate function in response to a command. Speech recognition includes the ability to distinguish between dictation text and commands.

A continuous speech recognition and voice response system provides a natural sounding and effective interactive, speech-driven dialogue from a data processing system. A concatenation of words into phrases and sentences improves recognition and mimic natural language processing. The system uses speaker-independent, continuous-speech to initiate the playback of audio files. The system employs high-speed context switching to modify the active vocabulary and applies high-speed context switching to modify or activate Audio WAV voice response files. The system uses dialogue history to activate selected context, Baukus-Naur Form (BNF) grammars and WAV files and provides phrase or sentence long dialogue prompts to improve accuracy. The system also provides audio prompts to improve accuracy and provides speech-activated buttons to navigate between menus.

Continuous speech recognition and voice response system and method to enable conversational dialogues with microprocessors

An advanced electronic telecommunication system is provided for the deposit, storage and delivery of audio messages. A Voice Message System (10) interconnects multiple private branch exchanges (12) of a subscriber with a central telephone office (22). Individual subscriber users may access the Voice Message System (10) through ON NET telephones (18) or OFF NET telephones (24). The Voice Message System (10) includes an administrative subsystem (60), call processor subsystem (62) and a data storage subsystem (64). The Voice Message System (10) enables the user to deposit a message in data storage subsystem (64) for automatic delivery to other addressees connected to the system. The Voice Message System (10) also enables a user to access the system to determine if any messages have been in the data storage subsystem (64) for him. Pre-recorded instructional messages are deposited in the data storage subsystem (64) for instructing a user on his progress in using the system. A Universal Control Board is a programmable electronic digital signal processing means for controlling certain functions of the administrative subsystem (60), call processor subsystem (62) and data storage subsystem (64).

Voice utterances are substituted for manipulation of a pointing device, the pointing device being of the kind which is manipulated to control motion of a cursor on a computer display and to indicate desired actions associated with the position of the cursor on the display, the cursor being moved and the desired actions being aided by an operating system in, the computer in response to control signals received from the pointing device, the computer also having an alphanumeric keyboard, the operating system being separately responsive to control signals received from the keyboard in accordance with a predetermined format specific to the keyboard; in the system, a voice recognizer recognizes the voiced utterance, and an interpreter converts the voiced utterance into control signals which will directly create a desired action aided by the operating system without first being converted into control signals expressed in the predetermined format specific to the keyboard. In another aspect, voiced utterances are converted to commands, expressed in a predefined command language, to be used by an operating system of a computer, by converting some voiced utterances into commands corresponding to actions to be taken by the operating system, and converting other voiced utterances into commands which carry associated text strings to be used as part of text being processed in an application program running under the operating system.

Controlled computer interface

A system is provided for voice signal processing including recognizing input voice messages and generating output voice messages. Digital processing of voice signals yields particular advantages. Voice responsive operations provide operator interaction flexibility. Communication of digital information in response to voice information provides data compression for communication applications. Other applications of the voice signal processing system include an audionic clock, an audionic calculator, and an audionic announciator.
