Chemically activated nanoporous carbon adsorbents from waste plastic for CO2 capture: Breakthrough adsorption study

With today’s continued drive to increase recycling rates of plastics, the low-hanging fruit of clean mono-streams of plastic waste has long since been picked. If Europe’s ambitious recycling targets are to be met, plastics waste streams that have until now been labeled ‘problematic’ and have consistently been sent to incineration, must be considered as well. One such stream is the sink fraction obtained from float-sink sorting of mixed post-consumer packaging waste. It is a very complex stream in terms of composition. Moreover, it contains a sizeable amount of PVC, which is considered detrimental to further mechanical recycling of any mixed plastic waste. Within the current research, the sink fraction was extensively analyzed for composition and mechanical properties, as well as treated for removal of PVC and non-ferrous metals. Subsequently, the Design from Recycling strategy was applied to successfully develop a new product with this material, called the Greentile. The Greentile was effectively manufactured and found to be a useful construction element for slanted green roofs.

Design from recycling: A complex mixed plastic waste case study

The global engineering plastics market has been growing as it replaces materials such as glass and metal. It can be used in a wide variety of products and technologies in other sectors of the economy such as energy generation, automotive, maritime, construction, electronics, packaging, and others. However, this increase in global use presented problems with respect to the increase in plastic waste generation. The existence and destination of plastic waste in the soil and hydric resources has been recognised as an emerging issue in preserving the environment. In this research, Micronized Polyethylene Terephthalate (micronized PET) was used as an additive for asphalt mixtures. Mechanical performance of asphalt mixtures using polymer-micronized PET-modified binder

This paper deals with the change of surface potential decay, surface resistivity, contact angle and XPS of ultraviolet-treated PET films. From the experimental results on the surface potential decay of UV degraded-samples, it was found that the accumulation of charge is decreased and the surface potential decay time is shortened. Also, from the result of XPS, it was found that the changes affected by the surface degradation of PET film were caused by the generation of carboxyl groups through the chain decomposition and recombination with oxygen molecules in the air.
