The invention concerns a method of forming a joint between aluminium workpieces. These carry an artifically applied e.g. chromate or anodic oxide coating on their surface. A curable adhesive containing up to 40% by weight of particulate filler having a maximum particle size of 300 microns is provided between the workpieces to be joined. Resistance welding is performed using a welding electrode whose tip has a surface with an average roughness depth of at least 10 microns. This increases electrode life and makes it possible to use lower welding currents than previously recommended.

The invention relates to a method and equipment for controlling flatness of a stainless steel strip in connection with cooling after annealing in a finishing line. The strip (1) is first in the direction of the strip movement (2) cooled feeding at least one cooling medium through at least one group of feeding devices (5, 6) located transversally to the direction of the strip movement for the whole width of the strip (1), the amount of the cooling medium being adjusted utilizing the recorded and predetermined data (7) of desired temperature of the strip for flatness, the temperature of the strip is then determined (8) and after the temperature determination a further step of cooling is carried out feeding at least one cooling medium through at least one group of feeding devices (9) located transversally to the direction of the strip movement (2), when the determined value of temperature is different from the predetermined value of temperature, before the flatness is controlled using a control device (11) containing a plurality of flatness control units (12) and locating transversally to the direction of the strip movement (2).

A belt cooling and guiding apparatus and method for cooling a casting belt of a twin belt caster (10). The cooling and guiding apparatus comprises at least one nozzle (30) having a support surface (46) facing a reverse surface of the casting belt (11, 12) provided with a continuous slot (31, 42, 84) in the support surface arranged transversely substantially completely across the casting belt. The slot allows for delivery of coolingliquid to the reverse surface of the belt in the form of a continuous film having uniform thickness and velocity of flow when considered in the transverse direction of the belt. This allows for even cooling transversely of the belt.

Cooling of metal strip (16) in a single or multistand cold rolling line by applying coolant liquid only to the lower surface of the strip (16), and removing the liquid therefrom, after each, or between successive roll stands (11a, 11b, 11c). A process is described for preparing aluminum sheet for resistance welding, which increases the useful life of the welding electrodes used for welding the thus prepared sheet. The process comprises the steps of: (a) treating both surfaces of the sheet portion to be welded to remove the non-uniform mill finish oxide layer and provide clean surfaces, and (b) providing a thin oxide layer on one cleaned surface and a thicker oxide layer on the other cleaned surface of said sheet, thereby creating a differential in oxide thickness between the surfaces of the sheet and hence a differential in surface resistance.
