Journal ArticleDOI
Altered bioenergetics and mitochondrial dysfunction of monocytes in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.
Lara Gibellini,Sara De Biasi,Annamaria Paolini,Rebecca Borella,Federica Boraldi,Marco Mattioli,Domenico Lo Tartaro,Lucia Fidanza,Alfredo Caro-Maldonado,Marianna Meschiari,Vittorio Iadisernia,Erica Bacca,Giovanni Riva,Luca Cicchetti,Daniela Quaglino,Giovanni Guaraldi,Stefano Busani,Massimo Girardis,Cristina Mussini,Andrea Cossarizza +19 more
TL;DR: High plasma levels of several inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, including GM‐CSF, IL‐18, CCL2, CXCL10, and osteopontin, finally confirm the importance of monocytes in COVID‐19 immunopathogenesis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Prevalence of human herpesvirus-6 chromosomal integration (CIHHV-6) in Italian solid organ and allogeneic stem cell transplant patients.
Leonardo Potenza,Patrizia Barozzi,Michele Masetti,Monica Pecorari,Paola Bresciani,Agnès Gautheret-Dejean,Giovanni Riva,Daniela Vallerini,S. Tagliazucchi,Mauro Codeluppi,F. Di Benedetto,Giorgio Enrico Gerunda,Franco Narni,Giuseppe Torelli,Mario Luppi +14 more
TL;DR: Before starting specific treatments, CIHHV‐6 should be excluded in transplant patients with HHV-6 viremia by the comparison of HHV‐ 6 loads on different fluids and tissues by theComparison of HHv‐6 Loads on different fluid and tissues may further prevent the misdiagnosis of CIHHVs6.
Journal ArticleDOI
Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) as novel inflammatory marker with prognostic significance in COVID-19 patients.
Giovanni Riva,Sara Castellano,Vincenzo Nasillo,Anna Maria Ottomano,Giuliano Bergonzini,Ambra Paolini,Beatrice Lusenti,Jovana Milic,Sara De Biasi,Lara Gibellini,Andrea Cossarizza,Stefano Busani,Massimo Girardis,Giovanni Guaraldi,Cristina Mussini,Rossella Manfredini,Mario Luppi,Enrico Tagliafico,Enrico Tagliafico,Tommaso Trenti +19 more
TL;DR: This pilot study shows that MDW can be useful in the monitoring of COVID-19 patients, as this innovative hematologic biomarker is easy to obtain, directly related to the activation state of a fundamental inflammatory cell subset, and endowed with relevant prognostic significance.
Journal ArticleDOI
COVID-19: more than a cytokine storm
TL;DR: A Secretaria de Estado de Saúde do Rio de Janeiro informa que registra, até esta quarta-feira (29/04), 8 869 casos confirmados e 794 óbitos por coronavírus (Covid-19) no estado.
Journal ArticleDOI
COVID-19: room for treating T cell exhaustion?
TL;DR: While awaiting for the development of effective antivirals and vaccines against this life-threating coronavirus, patients could harness the opportunity to try tuning patients’ immune system by using different immunomodulatory strategies now available, aiming to obtain more proper immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection and, hopefully, to reduce COVID-19-related mortality.
