We will review some of the major results in random graphs and some of the more challenging open problems. We will cover algorithmic and structural questions. We will touch on newer models, including those related to the WWW.

Random graphs

Workflow management promises a new solution to an age-old problem: controlling, monitoring, optimizing and supporting business processes. What is new about workflow management is the explicit representation of the business process logic which allows for computerized support. This paper discusses the use of Petri nets in the context of workflow management. Petri nets are an established tool for modeling and analyzing processes. On the one hand, Petri nets can be used as a design language for the specification of complex workflows. On the other hand, Petri net theory provides for powerful analysis techniques which can be used to verify the correctness of workflow procedures. This paper introduces workflow management as an application domain for Petri nets, presents state-of-the-art results with respect to the verification of workflows, and highlights some Petri-net-based workflow tools.

This book presents a unified theory of Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPNs) together with a set of illustrative examples from different application fields. The continuing success of GSPNs and the increasing interest in using them as a modelling paradigm for the quantitative analysis of distributed systems suggested the preparation of this volume with the intent of providing newcomers to the field with a useful tool for their first approach. Readers will find a clear and informal explanation of the concepts followed by formal definitions when necessary or helpful. The largest section of the book however is devoted to showing how this methodology can be applied in a range of domains.

Modelling with Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets

The Object Management Group's (OMG) Model Driven Architecture (MDA) strategy envisages a world where models play a more direct role in software production, being amenable to manipulation and transformation by machine. Model Driven Engineering (MDE) is wider in scope than MDA. MDE combines process and analysis with architecture. This article sets out a framework for model driven engineering, which can be used as a point of reference for activity in this area. It proposes an organisation of the modelling 'space' and how to locate models in that space. It discusses different kinds of mappings between models. It explains why process and architecture are tightly connected. It discusses the importance and nature of tools. It identifies the need for defining families of languages and transformations, and for developing techniques for generating/configuring tools from such definitions. It concludes with a call to align metamodelling with formal language engineering techniques.

Model Driven Engineering

The class of stochastic well-formed colored nets (SWN's) was defined as a syntactic restriction of stochastic high-level nets. The interest of the introduction of restrictions in the model definition is the possibility of exploiting the symbolic reachability graph (SRG) to reduce the complexity of Markovian performance evaluation with respect to classical Petri net techniques. It turns out that SWN's allow the representation of any color function in a structured form, so that any unconstrained high-level net can be transformed into a well-formed net. Moreover, most constructs useful for the modeling of distributed computer systems and architectures directly match the "well-formed" restriction, without any need of transformation. A nontrivial example of the usefulness of the technique in the performance modeling and evaluation of multiprocessor architectures is included. >

Stochastic well-formed colored nets and symmetric modeling applications

GreatSPN 1.7: graphical editor and analyzer for timed and stochastic Petri nets

The new class of Well Formed Coloured Nets (WN) is formally defined as an extension of Regular Nets (RN), together with an extended Symbolic Reachability Graph (SRG) construction algorithm. WNs allow the representation of any colour function in a structured form, so that they have the same modelling power as general coloured nets (CPN). In particular, with respect to RN, WNs allow the use of non-symmetric initial markings, of repeated occurrences of the same basic class in the Cartesian product defining the colours for transitions and places, and of the “constant” and “successor” functions as arc labels. The SRG allows colour symmetries to be exploited to reduce the space and time complexity of the analysis by reachability graph. The advantage of using WNs instead of unconstrained CPNs is that the detection of symmetries to construct the SRG is totally algorithmic, and requires no special heuristics.

On Well-Formed Coloured Nets and Their Symbolic Reachability Graph

GreatSPN is a tool that supports the design and the qualitative and quantitative analysis of Generalized Stochastic Petri Nets (GSPN) and of Stochastic Well-Formed Nets (SWN). The very first version of GreatSPN saw the light in the late eighties of last century: since then two main releases where developed and widely distributed to the research community: GreatSPN1.7 [13], and GreatSPN2.0 [8]. This paper reviews the main functionalities of GreatSPN2.0 and presents some recently added features that significantly enhance the efficacy of the tool.
