Aerogel is a kind of synthetic porous material, in which the liquid component of the gel is replaced with a gas. Aerogel has specific acoustic properties and remarkably lower thermal conductivity (≈0.013 W/m K) than the other commercial insulating materials. It also has superior physical and chemical characteristics like the translucent structure. Therefore, it is considered as one of the most promising thermal insulating materials for building applications. Besides its applications in residential and industrial buildings, aerogel has a great deal of application areas such as spacecrafts, skyscrapers, automobiles, electronic devices, clothing etc. Although current cost of aerogel still remains higher compared to the conventional insulation materials, intensive efforts are made to reduce its manufacturing cost and hence enable it to become widespread all over the world. In this study, a comprehensive review on aerogel and its utilization in buildings are presented. Thermal insulation materials based on aerogel are illustrated with various applications. Economic analysis and future potential of aerogel are also considered in the study.

Recent advances in ageing of 7xxx series aluminum alloys: A physical metallurgy perspective

Abstract This study presents an experimental investigation to improve Selective Laser Melting (SLM) regarding aspects such as surface roughness, density, precision and micro machining capability by employing secondary processes such as Selective Laser Erosion (SLE) and laser re-melting. SLM is a layered additive manufacturing technique for the direct fabrication of functional parts by fusing together metal powder particles. Laser re-melting, applied after each layer or only on the top surfaces, is used to improve the roughness and density while SLE, a subtractive process, is combined with SLM to improve the precision and micro machining capability.

Manufacturing by Combining Selective Laser Melting and Selective Laser Erosion / Laser Re-melting (Productie door het combineren van selectief laser smelten en selectief laser eroderen / laser hersmelten)

This work provides an overview of the aluminum (Al) recycling process, from the scrap upgrading to the melting process. Innovations and new trends regarding the Al recycling technologies are highlighted. Aluminum recycling offers advantages in terms of environmental and economic benefits. The presence of deleterious impurities in recycled Al alloys is increasing and this is the main drawback if compared to primary alloys. The continuous growth of undesired elements can be mitigated by different technologies, preliminary operations and treatments, and by the optimization of the melting process. Downgrading and dilution are possible solutions to reduce the rate of impurities, but they are not sustainable if the final use of Al alloy continuously increases. The main objectives in the development of the Al recycling are shown and discussed. In particular, the evolution of preliminary treatments of the scrap, as sorting, comminution and de-coating, is reported and a review of the melting technologies is also presented. However, the choice of performing preliminary operations to the melting stage, thus improving the operating conditions during the furnace running, is a trade-off between costs and process efficiency.
