A guided tour of some portion of the World Wide Web (WWW) works as part of an ordinary web page, can be served by any web server, and can be used by web browsers without additional software. The system guides a user through a tour by displaying in sequence actual web pages in the tour along with a corresponding teaching web page. The teaching web page includes educational information about the current web page. The tour includes commentary, allowance for side trips, true visiting of the tour pages, not mere copies, maps, and "static" (user clicks for next page) and "dynamic" (a timer controls how long a tour page is on-screen) tours.

An interactive and dynamically customizable guided tour of some portion of the World Wide Web monitors and dynamically adapts in response to like-minded users as well as provides recommendations during the traversal. The invention includes features for: electronic commerce; side trips; true visiting of Web sites; maps; pre-fetching of Web objects; insertion of interactive decision points; customized insertion of advertisements; simultaneous traversal of multiple hyperpaths; collection of and dynamic modification of a tour based on collected route information and/or touring statistics.

A method for providing content via a communications network on a user's computer, obtained from a plurality of resources in an organized arrangement is provided. The method includes creating a show structure of nodes, each node identifying a resource from a plurality of accessible resources, at least some of which are network accessible resources. Without requiring user input, a plurality of the network accessible resources, identified by a corresponding node, are automatically accessed. Content corresponding to each of the accessed resources is automatically presented through the user's computer in accordance with the show structure. Advertisement content is presented to the user in connection with the automatic presentation of the content through the user's computer.

The World Wide Web is one of the fastest growing Networked Information Systems in history. The revolution has been brought about by use of GUIs such as NCSA's Mosaic, and the distributed hypertext language HTML, Universal Resource Locators, and with simple protocols for client server access. Another contributory factor has been the development of a number of filters that have permitted the introduction of material prepared using almost all the well known word processing and desk-top publishing tools. However, this growth has led to problems for new users finding the information they want. This paper is about a tool for generating tours of the web to enable experts to become cyber-carto-graphers, mapmakers of the new virtual world, and share their findings with novice users.
