Laser welding method

An apparatus and method for forming a friction stir weld joint in a workpiece are provided. The apparatus includes a friction stir welding tool having a shoulder and a rotatable pin extending therefrom. The rotational speed of the pin can be adjusted during a friction stir welding operation, e.g., cyclically and/or according to a predetermined schedule, so that the pin mixes the plasticized material of the workpiece. The workpiece can also be preheated before friction stir welding.

Two parts are welded together at a weld spot in a groove. A spot adjacent the weld spot is heated simultaneously and independently of the welding so that the heating and welding form a heat-treated weld bead along the groove. Preheat treatment, postheat treatment, or both, may be used simultaneously with welding to maximize performance of the resulting weld joint. Preheat and postheat treatment may be performed using lasers while the welding may be performed by TIG welding or laser welding. The welding torch and preheat and postheat lasers are coplanarly aligned.

SOLUTION: Two parts 12 are welded each other by a weld spot 18 in a groove 14. Spots 24, 26 adjacent to the weld spot are welded, further simultaneously and independently are heated, a heat treated weld bead 30 is formed. Preheat treatment and post heat treatment or both are simultaneously executed to maximize a weld joint performance. Preheat treatment and post heat treatment are executed with using laser beams 38, 40, on the other hand, welding is executed by TIG welding or laser beam welding. A welding torch 36, a preheat laser beam 38 and a postheat laser beam 40 are arrayed in the same plane.
