A framework for better understanding membrane distillation separation process

To improve the performance of particle image velocimetry in measuring instantaneous velocity fields, direct cross-correlation of image fields can be used in place of auto-correlation methods of interrogation of double- or multiple-exposure recordings. With improved speed of photographic recording and increased resolution of video array detectors, cross-correlation methods of interrogation of successive single-exposure frames can be used to measure the separation of pairs of particle images between successive frames. By knowing the extent of image shifting used in a multiple-exposure and by a priori knowledge of the mean flow-field, the cross-correlation of different sized interrogation spots with known separation can be optimized in terms of spatial resolution, detection rate, accuracy and reliability.

Steam-circuit modelling of the Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector

This study presents a new concept that combines microtechnology with solar thermal energy to provide a free portable
energy source. A water-methanol mixture flows through an array of parallel microchannels which are fabricated into a
silicon matrix using conventional micro-fabrication techniques. A vacuum layer is interposed between the channels and
the external surface to thermally insulate the channels from the ambient temperature. A selective coating is deposited on
one of the vacuum walls to absorb the short wavelength incoming radiation and reduce the long wavelength radiation,
hence reducing the heat losses. A geometry and material optimization is still being developed in order to obtain the
highest possible efficiency for the micro-heater, while keeping a low pressure drop in the micro-channels. The methanol
outlet temperature is predicted to be higher than 250°C. This temperature is required for hydrogen production in a
methanol reforming micro-reactor. Therefore, it is envisaged that the micro-solar heater will supply the thermal energy
needed for hydrogen generation, that can later be used as fuel for microfuel cells. Both technologies can be integrated in
a portable device.

A micro solar heater for portable energy generation

The performance of a membrane based heat exchanger utilizing porous paper as the heat and moisture transfer media used in ventilation energy recovery systems is presented. A mathematical model was developed and validated against the experimental results. This model can be used for design aide to predict the effectiveness of the heat exchanger. Furthermore, system analysis of an air conditioner shows an increase in the coefficient of performance and cooling capacity when paper heat exchanger is used, especially in a climate similar to the weather in Malaysia and Darwin.

Membrane Based Enthalpy Heat Exchanger Performance in HVAC System

This paper presents a method of characterizing the performance of hot water storage tanks in terms of their temperature distribution. The change in exergy from the stratified state to the delivery state depends on the stored energy and the stratification. It can thus be used to define the storage efficiency for sensible heat storage devices. The effect of temperature distribution, delivery temperature and tank cross section on exergy is investigated. The advantage that stratification offers over a mixed tank is examined in terms of the storage efficiency and overall solar water heating system performance. Exergy is used to assess the operation of mantle heat exchangers in solar water heating systems and it is shown that an exergy, rather than energy, should be used to ascertain the performance of such heat exchangers.

A second law approach to characterizing thermally stratified hot water storage in solar water heaters

An air source heat pump water heater was tested over a range of temperature and humidity conditions and load cycles. The system utilised fan and finned coil evaporator, while a coiled condenser wrapped around the water tank was used to heat the water. During the tests, the system achieved COP’s between 2 and 5 over a range of temperature and load conditions. The results were then compared with a similar capacity solar boosted heat pump water heater system.
