A rotary bit for drilling subterranean formations. The bit includes a separately-fabricated bit body and cutter support structures, the latter of which may be designed as blades, ribs, pads or otherwise, depending upon the bit style. The body and one or more cutter support structures are assembled and secured together after fabrication. Separate fabrication of the cutter support structures permits more precise cutter positioning, as well as orientation, and promotes the use of stronger and more diverse cutter affixation means. The cutter support structures may be adjustably radially movable with respect to the bit body, so as to provide the ability to fabricate bits of various gage sizes within a range using a single bit body and single size of cutter support structure.

Bit for subterranean drilling fabricated from separately-formed major components

The present invention provides a superhard polycrystalline diamond or diamond-like element with greatly improved resistance to thermal degradation without loss of impact strength. Collectively called PCD elements, these elements are formed with a binder-catalyzing material in a high-temperature, high-pressure process. The PCD element has a plurality of partially bonded diamond or diamond-like crystals forming at least one continuous diamond matrix, and the interstices among the diamond crystals forming at least one continuous interstitial matrix containing a catalyzing material. The element has a working surface and a body, where a portion of the interstitial matrix in the body adjacent to the working surface is substantially free of the catalyzing material, and the remaining interstitial matrix contains the catalyzing material. This translates to higher wear resistance in cutting applications, higher heat transfer capacity in heat sink applications, and has advantages in numerous other applications including hollow dies, indentors, tool mandrels, and wear elements.

Polycrystalline diamond partially depleted of catalyzing material

Thermally stable diamond constructions comprise a diamond body having a plurality of bonded diamond crystals and a plurality of interstitial regions disposed among the crystals. A metallic substrate is attached to the diamond body. A working surface is positioned along an outside portion of the diamond body, and the diamond body comprises a first region that is substantially free of a catalyst material, and a second region that includes the catalyst material. The diamond body first region extends from the working surface to depth of at least about 0.02 mm to a depth of less than about 0.09 mm. The diamond body includes diamond crystals having an average diamond grain size of greater than about 0.02 mm, and comprises at least 85 percent by volume diamond based on the total volume of the diamond body.

Thermally stable diamond polycrystalline diamond constructions

Thermally stable ultra-hard compact constructions of this invention comprise an ultra-hard material body that includes a thermally stable region positioned adjacent a surface of the body. The thermally stable region is formed from consolidated materials that are thermally stable at temperatures greater than about 750° C. The thermally stable region can occupy a partial portion of or the entire ultra-hard material body. The ultra-hard material body can comprise a composite of separate ultra-hard material elements that each form different regions of the body, at least one of the regions being thermally stable. The ultra-hard material body is attached to a desired substrate, an intermediate material is interposed between the body and the substrate, and the intermediate material joins the substrate and body together by high pressure/high temperature process.

Thermally stable ultra-hard material compact constructions

A preform cutting element, for a rotary drill bit, and a rotary drill bit with prefrom cutting elements including a facing table of superhard material having a front face, a rear surface is bonded to the front surface of a substrate which is less hard than the superhard material and has a rim or edge section of the superhard material at least partially covered by a metallic material different from the substrate material. The metallic material is bonded to the edge section of the superhard material through a high pressure bonding step. The superhard material covered by the compliant metallic material is protected from impact forces occurring in drill bit operations such as tripping.

Cutting elements for rotary drill bits

A rotary drill bit for use in drilling holes in subsurface formations comprises a bit body having a leading face and a gauge region, a number of blades formed on the leading face of the bit and extending outwardly away from the axis of the bit so as to define between the blades a number of fluid channels leading towards the gauge region, a number of cutting elements mounted side-by-side along each blade, and a number of nozzles in the bit body for supplying drilling fluid to the fluid channels for cleaning and cooling the cutting elements. In each of the fluid channels, adjacent the gauge region, is an opening into an enclosed passage which passes internally through the bit body to an outlet which, in use, communicates with the annulus between the drill string and the wall of the borehole being drilled. The gauge region of the drill bit comprises a substantially continuous bearing surface which extends around the whole of the gauge region.

A PCD cutting element (100) for use in earth boring drill bits where die interstices ((62) remote from the working surface (104) are filled with a catalyzing material (64) and the interstices adjacent to the working surface are substantially free of the catalyzing material is described. An intermediate region between the substantially free portion and filled portion has a plurality of generally conically sectioned catalyst-free projections (108) which taper down, extending to a second depth (110) from the planar working surface, preferably about 0.5 times or more of the first depth (102).

Pdc cutter with stress diffusing structures

A rotary drill bit for drilling holes in subsurface formations comprises a bit body having a leading face and a gauge region, and a plurality of blades formed on the leading face of the bit body and extending outwardly away from the axis of the bit towards the gauge region so as to define a fluid flow channel between the leading edge of each blade and the trailing edge of the adjacent preceding blade. A plurality of cutting elements are mounted along the leading edge of each blade, and there is provided, in one or more of the channels, a main nozzle which directs fluid along the leading edge of one blade so as to clean and cool the cutting elements on it, and a subsidiary nozzle which is located and orientated so as to direct fluid along the trailing edge of the preceding blade in a direction opposite to the direction of flow from the main nozzle, so as to tend to enhance partial recirculation of fluid flow in the flow channel between the blades.
