A rotating electrical machine, such as an aircraft starter-generator, includes an exciter that has its stator windings divided into a number of sections. A plurality of switches are electrically coupled to the exciter stator winding sections and are configured and controlled so that the exciter stator winding sections may be selectively coupled in series or in parallel with one another, and selectively coupled to receive either DC or AC power.

The motor is for driving viscous loads, e.g. a fan, and comprises a stator (10), a permanent magnet rotor (11), a single phase unipolar winding (13) on the stator, and a permanent magnet (29) fixed relative to the stator with its poles angularly spaced with respect to the axis of the motor. The magnet (29) is positioned so that the magnetic coupling between the magnet (29) and the permanent magnet rotor will create stable rest positions for the rotor only where the winding (13) will be energized and will develop torque when power to the motor is switched on. A Hall integrated circuit (16) is provided to detect the position of the rotor relative to the stator and to alternately energize and not energize the winding (13).

A rotary electric machine apparatus includes a first rotary electric machine that includes a first rotor, a first stator and a first housing for containing the first rotor and the first stator, a second rotary electric machine that includes a second rotor, a second stator and a second housing for containing the second rotor and the second stator, a pump that supplies a cooling liquid to the first rotary electric machine and the second rotary electric machine, and a communication pipe that communicates a gas-phase in the first housing and a gas-phase in the second housing so that an internal pressures of the first housing and the second housing are balanced to each other.

A stepping motor for use in a remote register, such as is used for the remote reading of electricity meters, is arranged to be advanced by current pulses of known constant polarity. The motor includes magnetic biasing means which effect further rotation of the rotor of the stepping motor in the same given direction each time that an input current pulse ends. The motor can therefore be controlled by a simple ON/OFF switch in the electricity meter circuit with a rectifier being provided in the remote register. The magnetic biasing means may consist of one or more cylindrical magnets co-axial with the rotor, or a straight or arcuate bar magnet adjacent to the periphery of the rotor.
