In 1982, the Belgian Pilots' Guild raised the question of what effect exposure to radar radiation--for example, that encountered in passing a pilot launch's radar--might have on the human body. Recapitulating investigations of this question, this article states that in 25 years of experience with radar, there have been no known incidents of pilots being affected by radar waves. In the future, however, involvement by some pilots with Vessel Traffic Service shore-based radar could affect pilots somewhat differently from limited exposure to pilot launch radar. Pilots who find themselves in new working conditions close to an emitting source should exercise care all times.

The Transfer Matrix

We present a numerical calculation of the heat transport in a Bragg mirror configuration made of materials that do not obey Fourier’s law of heat conduction. The Bragg mirror is made of materials that are described by the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation. By analyzing the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation’s solutions, we define the thermal wave surface impedance to design highly reflective thermal Bragg mirrors. Even for mirrors with a few layers, very high reflectance is achieved (>90%). The Bragg mirror configuration is also a system that makes evident the wave-like nature of the solution of the Cattaneo-Vernotte equation by showing frequency pass-bands that are absent if the materials obey the usual Fourier’s law.

Bragg Mirrors for Thermal Waves

Non-Fourier heat conduction models assume wave-like behavior does exist in the heat conduction process. Based on this wave-like behavior, thermal conduction controlled in a one-dimensional periodical structure, named thermal wave crystal, has been demonstrated through both theoretical analysis and numerical simulation based on the Cattaneo-Vernotte (CV) heat-conduction model. The transfer matrix method and Bloch analysis have been applied to calculate the band structure of thermal wave propagating in thermal wave crystals. And the temperature responses are obtained by using the FDTD method, which is also used to verify the correctness of the band structure. The results show that band gaps do exist due to the Bragg scattering. Then, a calculation method to predict the mid-gap frequency of band gaps for the thermal wave crystal has been introduced in this Letter. And key parameters determining the band gaps have been discussed. This study shows the potential applications of this novel mechanism, such as thermal imagining, thermal diodes and thermal waveguides.

Heat Reduction by Thermal Wave Crystals

Gold nanoparticles absorb light energy and convert it to thermal energy that transfers to the surrounding environment, making them potentially useful for the hyperthermic treatments well known as photothermal therapy (PTT). Further, it is well documented that noble metal nanoparticles are capable of significantly enhancing the Raman scattering of molecules attached to their surfaces, a technique which is termed surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). SERS combined with PTT has the ability to locate nanoparticles at depth and trigger heat production, providing an effective methodology to both seek and destroy diseased tissues. While PTT and SERS are often used in tandem and there are several ways of individually measuring SERS and thermal output, there is currently no method available that pre-screens both properties prior to in vitro or in vivo application. In this work, we have designed a 3D printed platform capable of coupling a commercially available Raman probe to a sample cuvette for SERS and heat output to be monitored simultaneously. We have compared the performance of morphologically complex gold nanoparticles, nanostars (AuNSs) and nanoplates (AuNPLs), which are both well utilized in SERS and photothermal experiments; and measured the SERS activity originating from common Raman reporter analytes 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (MBA) and 1,4-benzenedithiol (BDT). We were able to show that the system effectively measures the thermal output and SERS activity of the particles and can evaluate the effect that multiple irradiation cycles have on the SERS signal.

Simultaneous Thermal and Spectroscopic Screening of Morphologically Complex Theranostic Gold Nanoparticles

In this paper we solve the Cattaneo-Vernotte Equation for a periodic heterostructure made of alternate layers of different materials. The solutions describe thermal waves traveling in a periodic system, and it allows us to introduce the concept of thermal crystals. We show that the dispersion relation shows the characteristics of a band-structure, however the corresponding Bloch wave vector is always complex corresponding to pseudo-bands, unlike what happens in photonic or acoustic crystals. In this context, we also discuss the use of the Floquet-Bloch theorem for thermal waves. The case of finite layered structures is also analyzed showing the possibility of changing the temperature and heat flux by introducing defects opening the possibility of thermal management through the pseudo-band structure.
