From 1993 to 1995, with a conventional fluorescence spectrophotometer (CFS) (convenient) and working in a synchronous scan model (easy-to-use), Pasternack et al. proposed the resonance light-scattering (RLS) technique, to efficiently characterize self-assemblies or self-aggregations of chromophores with good electronic coupling. Incident wavelengths were specially considered within their absorption envelopes (rather unorthodox), and their amplified signals were observed (good sensitivity and selectivity). Due to these absorbing benefits, RLS technique, as a novel readout method, commenced on its exciting analytical tours soon after Liu et al. and especially Li et al., separately, set out their corresponding pioneering investigations from 1995 to 1997. From then on, it has received an increasing attention by analysts, as a consequence exhibiting more and more fascinating analytical applications. Moreover, various attractive RLS-derived techniques have been developed successively to improve it or to enlarge its possibilities. Later on, Liu et al. and Li et al., Tabak et al., Yguerabide et al., Huang et al., Lakowicz et al. and Fernandez Band et al. have made their outstanding contributions. In this review, we concentrate on major achievements of RLS in analytical chemistry for over a decade, involving the developments and analytical applications of RLS derived techniques treated as an impacting progress of RLS technique in analytical chemistry. Finally, an indication of future directions of RLS technique in analytical chemistry is provided.

Resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) of cationic surfactants–Eosin Y systems and their analytical application have been studied. In aqueous solution at pH 2∼3, Eosin Y reacts with a monomer of cationic surfactants (CS), such as Zephiramine (Zeph), tetradecylpyridinium bromide (TPB), cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB), to form an ion associate and a new RRS spectrum appears. The spectral characteristics of the five ion associates are similar and their maximum scattering wavelengths (λmax) are all at 313 nm. The intensity of RRS at λmax of the ion associate is directly proportional to the concentration of CS in the range of 0∼3.0 μg/25 mL. The technique has high sensitivity for the determination of CS; their detection limit is between 5.57 ng/mL and 7.60 ng/mL depending on the CS. In this case, most metal and non-metal ions, NH4

 + and some anionic surfactants do not interfere, so that the method has a good selectivity. It can be applied to the determination of trace amounts of cationic surfactants in water samples.

Resonance Rayleigh scattering for the determination of cationic surfactants with Eosin Y

Intense resonance Rayleigh scattering (RRS) appears when mercury (II) reacts with thiocyanate and a basic triphenylmethane dye (BTPMD), such as crystal violet (CV), ethyl violet (EV), brilliant green (BG), malachite green (MG) or indine green (IG), to form an ion-association complex of the type (BTPMD)2[Hg(SCN)4]. The characteristics of RRS spectra of the ion-association complexes and suitable conditions for the reactions were investigated. The intensity of RRS is directly proportional to the concentration of mercury (II) in the range of 0±2.0 μg/25 ml. The RRS methods have very high sensitivities for determination of mercury (II); their detection limits are between 1.68 ng/ml and 6.00 ng/ml on different dye systems. The effects of foreign ions and ways to improve the selectivity were studied. The new highly sensitive methods for the determination of trace amounts of mercury based on the RRS of the ion-association complexes have been developed.
