There is a considerable controversy about whether western Amazonia was ever covered by marine waters during the Miocene [23 to 5 Ma (million years ago)]. We investigated the possible occurrence of Miocene marine incursions in the Llanos and Amazonas/Solimoes basins, using sedimentological and palynological data from two sediment cores taken in eastern Colombia and northwestern Brazil together with seismic information. We observed two distinct marine intervals in the Llanos Basin, an early Miocene that lasted ~0.9 My (million years) (18.1 to 17.2 Ma) and a middle Miocene that lasted ~3.7 My (16.1 to 12.4 Ma). These two marine intervals are also seen in Amazonas/Solimoes Basin (northwestern Amazonia) but were much shorter in duration, ~0.2 My (18.0 to 17.8 Ma) and ~0.4 My (14.1 to 13.7 Ma), respectively. Our results indicate that shallow marine waters covered the region at least twice during the Miocene, but the events were short-lived, rather than a continuous full-marine occupancy of Amazonian landscape over millions of years.

Miocene flooding events of western Amazonia

In order to understand the significance of detrital grain ages in sedimentary basins, a new approach is presented. Five characteristic paths, identified by the change in age of detrital grain populations combined with the change in lagtime over time, can be related to different geodynamic settings in the source regions. When lagtime and grain age increase over time, a change in source must be invoked – this is usually a direct response to a geological event. A constant cooling age, a vertical path, associated implicitly with increasing lagtime, implies erosion of materials that had passed through the closure temperature rapidly – exhuming sufficient rock to supply detritus over the time of the path. Constant lagtimes, regardless of the lagtime itself, are indicative of thermochronological stability in the source region. This can involve fast or slow cooling. Finally, decreasing lagtimes support the notion of increasing cooling rates in the source regions over time. A test study is presented from sediments of the northern Ecuadorian Sub‐Andean Zone where geological events had previously been identified using alternative methods. The addition of heavy‐mineral studies increased the precision in the interpretation. At 90 Ma, rapidly decreasing lagtimes point to a phase of tectonic activity. From about 85 Ma until about 60 Ma the lagtimes were approximately zero. This represents a phase of rapid exhumation of the source regions correlating with the previously identified Pallatanga event. An associated increase of metamorphic minerals occurs over this time span, pointing to increased erosion from deeper horizons. At about 70 Ma, the oldest source region, the shield to the east, was switched off. This timing correlates with a change from marine to continental conditions in the basin, a change in palaeocurrent directions from the east to the west, as well as an associated influx of material from the growing Cordillera Real. At about 55 Ma, a change in source is identified by a change in slope of the lagtime curve together with a change in heavy minerals. From 50 to 35 Ma a renewed period of tectonism in the source region is correlated with the docking of the Macuchi terrane which clearly had an effect of increased erosion in the Cordillera Real bringing in higher grade metamorphic minerals. From about 32 Ma onwards the lagtime has been somewhat constant at about 30 Myr. This does not imply, however, a steady‐state environment as it is well known from other geological evidence that there have been other events within this time frame. One must be cautious about over‐interpreting the lagtime as a method to determine steady state in any region. It is a matter of scale.

Detrital thermochronology – a new perspective on hinterland tectonics, an example from the Andean Amazon Basin, Ecuador

Stratigraphic responses to a major tectonic event in a foreland basin: the Ecuadorian Oriente Basin from Eocene to Oligocene times

The retro-arc foreland Andean Amazon Basin records sedimentary infill from the South American craton and the emerging Northern Andean chain from the middle Cretaceous until Present day. The U/Pb ages of detrital zircons indicate significant reworking of Archean-Proterozoic (max. 2.9 Ga) and Paleozoic crust and sediments, which were eroded on both sides. Heavy mineral associations show that the material derived from Proterozoic craton was supplied by Cretaceous reworking of non-metamorphosed (unannealed) Paleozoic and older sedimentary rocks, which cover the Amazon Craton. Following latest Cretaceous switch of the dominant sediment source to the Andean cordillera, the influx of Precambrian zircons persisted, and these zircons were derived from the metamorphosed basement and Paleozoic sediments of the Cordillera Real (Loja terrane). Re-evaluation of existing detrital zircon fission-track record proves that the rise of the Cordillera Real at the Cretaceous-Tertiary transition was initiated by the collision of Caribbean Oceanic Plateau and associated arc elements from 75–65 Ma. A further important exhumation event also occurred in the Late Oligocene, which is correlated with the break-up of the Farallon plate.

Recycling of Proterozoic crust in the Andean Amazon foreland of Ecuador: implications for orogenic development of the Northern Andes

Abstract The Oriente Basin is part of the retro-arc foreland basin system that developed in the zone of transition between the Central Andes and the Northern Andes since Late Cretaceous times. It is deformed by thick-skinned tectonics related to the inversion of pre-Cretaceous extensional fault systems, which have broken the basin into three tectonic domains during three mean periods of inversion (Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene, Early Eocene and Miocene). The northern part of the present-day Sub-Andean wedge-top corresponded, during the Late Cretaceous, to the forebulge depozone. The NNE–SSW Sacha–Shushufindi Corridor (SSC) extends from the northern region of the Oriente foredeep to the Sub-Andean Cutucú Cordillera. It results from inversion of the Late Triassic–Early Jurassic rifting. The eastern Capiron–Tiputini Inverted System (CTIS) results from the inversion of the normal faults of the Late Jurassic back-arc basin. The Ishpingo–Tambococha–Tiputini (ITT) trend is located in the present-day forebulge depozone of the basin. This position presents favourable conditions for oil biodegradation. Source rocks throughout the Oriente Basin are immature or poorly mature. A large part of oil accumulations must be explained by long-distance migration from the west, before the Eocene uplift of the Cordillera Real, or from the south.

Thick-skinned tectonics in the Oriente foreland basin of Ecuador

The Oriente basin of Ecuador has produced a substantial amount of oil over the past 20 years. Nearly 3 billion bbl of oil have been recovered from the principal reservoirs in the Cretaceous Napo and Hollin formations. Subtle north-south structures, commonly associated with Andean-related faulting, have trapped much of the recoverable hydrocarbons in the thicker sandstones deposited within the Hollin and Napo reservoirs. East to west thinning of these reservoir units also contributes to the formation of stratigraphic traps. Both the Hollin and Napo formations comprise successions of eastward-sourced fluvial and deltaic sedimentary deposits that prograded westward into shoreline and marine shelf parasequences. The Albian Hollin reservoir interval consists of a dominant alluvial plain sandstone sequence (Main Hollin sandstone) that occupies much of the Oriente basin. In the western Oriente, the uppermost Hollin section grades vertically into open marine strata with isolated tidal- and storm-influenced sandstone bodies. The overlying Napo stratigraphy also consists of sand-rich fluvial and deltaic deposits in the eastern Oriente and abruptly changes to marine shales and limestones and lowstand valley-fill sandstones in the western part of the basin. Extensive structural and stratigraphic trap potential remains within the Napo and Hollin strata in the Oriente basin. High-resolution geophysical techniques and detailed geologic reservoir characterization facilitate successful exploitation of these remaining reserves.
