The experiences of Latin American countries are not fully incorporated into current debates concerning the age of mass migration, even though 13 million Europeans migrated to the region between 1870 and 1930. This survey draws together different aspects of the Latin America immigration experience. Its main objective is to rethink the role of European migration to the region, addressing several major questions in the economics of migration: whether immigrants were positively selected from their sending countries, how immigrants assimilated into the host economies, the role of immigration policies, and the long‐run effects of immigration. Immigrants came from the economically backward areas of southern and eastern Europe, yet their adjustment to the host labour markets in Latin America seems to have been successful. The possibility of rapid social upgrading made Latin America attractive for European immigrants. Migrants were positively selected from origin according to literacy. The most revealing aspect of new research is showing the positive long‐run effects that European immigrants had in Latin American countries. The political economy of immigration policies deserves new research, particularly for Brazil and Cuba. The case of Argentina shows a more complex scenario than the classic representation of landowners constantly supporting an open‐door policy.

The article discusses how early economists, sometimes informed by the pioneer report on a Latin American country (Mexico) by the geographer A. von Humboldt, interpreted the connections between natural resources, institutions and growth. The paradox of a negative relation between natural wealth and growth was elaborated, before Humboldt,by Hume. Humboldt's account of the high degree of income inequality in Mexico caught Malthus's attention, who turned it into a key element of his anti-Ricardo view that the fertility of soil may be associated with poor growth if there is a lack of effective demand. Cairnes claimed that the structural impact of a natural resource boom on the rest of the economy is compatible with the comparative-advantage framework. J.S. Mill articulated the potential perverse effects of natural wealth on effort supply and weak institutions, a theme conspicuous in the modem literature about the “natural resource curse”.

Los motivos habr?a que buscarlos en la consolidaci?n del fen?meno, en la sustituci?n de "pueblo" por "revoluci?n" como ?nico legitimador, proceso ya en marcha con Obreg?n, y finalmente, en el regreso de Calles y los gobiernos subsi guientes al elitismo de los principios de la revoluci?n en rela ci?n al sector dirigente del poder. This work discusses the relevance pre-Hispanic archaeological areas in the Yucatan peninsula had for the creation of American archaeology, especially of its original centers in Bostonand New York, which held periodical and sometimes conflicting relations with Chicago. The author claims that the “discovering” of what during the 1920's became known as the “Mayan Area” offered New England antique dealers their own and exclusive area , which was gradually “cleansed” of European agents and put under the control of a close-knit group of Bostonians and their allies, thanks, among other things, to the control of the consulate in Merida. The process of conceptually and institutionally construing the Mayan Area, which began in the 1880's, was essential for professionalizing American archaeology, consolidating its most important museums, and positioning the United States, in an exercise of scientific and cultural State building , at the same level as the European archaeological and anthropological communities.

LOS BOSTONIANS, YUCATÁN Y LOS PRIMEROS RUMBOS DE LA ARQUEOLOGÍA AMERiCANiSTA ESTADOUNIDENSE, 1875-1894

This article continues the narrative of the experiences of the businessmen-academics and collectors connected to Harvard University –the so-called Bostonians– in the archaeological sites of Yucatan, which were explored towards the end of the 1880s by Edward H. Thompson under their patronage, including his appointment as the U.S. consul in Merida – as a form of protection – on their recommendation. This article reconstructs the loss of control of the strategic consulate by the Bostonians between 1893 and 1897. This narrative covers the occupation and the beginning of the looting of Chichen Itza, as well as the pseudo-scientific narrative the excavation provokes. It also analyzes the networks of alliances and rivalries resulting from the arrival of other U.S. archaeologists and archaeological institutions. It concludes with the paths Thompson pursued to undertake the adventure of his lifetime: the dredging of Chichen Itza’s Sacred Cenote.
