AIMS
To report a study examining the relationships among coping, anxiety and resilience and to identify predictors of anxiety and resilience in adolescents undergoing cancer treatment.


BACKGROUND
Anxiety is the main psychological disturbance in adolescents with cancer, but predictors in the context of anxiety related cancer treatments have not been investigated.


DESIGN
Cross-sectional study.


METHODS
Adolescents (n = 131) recruited from three medical centres between 2010-2011. The eligible participants were diagnosed with cancer, without mental disease and receiving chemotherapy. Participants were assessed with the paediatric cancer coping scale, revised children's manifest anxiety scale, second edition, and the Haase adolescent resilience in illness scale.


RESULTS
Over 20% of participants scored high on worry. The most commonly used coping strategy was cognitive coping, followed by problem-oriented coping and finally by defensive coping. There was a statistically significant correlation between defensive coping and level of worry. Resilience was positively correlated with cognitive coping and problem-oriented coping. The cognitive coping and defensive coping were found to predict anxiety and resilience significantly by a step-wise multiple regression analysis and accounted for 40·9% and 46·5% of total variance, respectively.


CONCLUSIONS
Cognitive coping and defensive coping are predictors for the level of anxiety and resilience in adolescents undergoing cancer treatment. Health providers should evaluate coping behaviour in patients and work towards a cognitive and problem-oriented coping style that will benefit the patient's mental health during treatment.

ÖZET GİRİŞ ve AMAÇ: Fiziksel hastalıklarda sıklıkla hastalarda eksik olarak görülen sağlıklı yaşam biçimi davranışları bireylerde umutsuzluğa neden olabilmektedir. Bu araştırma kalp yetersizliği hastalarında sağlıklı yaşam biçimi davranışları ve umutsuzluk arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek amacıyla yapıldı. YÖNTEM ve GEREÇLER: Araştırmanın evrenini Turgut Özal Tıp Merkezinde Kalp Yetersizliği tanısı ile tedavi gören hastalar oluşturdu. Araştırmanın örneklemini evrenden evreni belli örnekleme yöntemiyle bulunan ve araştırmaya katılmaya gönüllü olan 251 hasta oluşturdu. Araştırmanın verileri Ekim 2015Şubat 2016 tarihleri arasında toplandı. Verilerin toplanmasında 'Anket Formu', 'Beck Umutsuzluk Ölçeği', 'Sağlıklı Yaşam Biçimi Davranışları Ölçeği II' kullanıldı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde ortalama, yüzdelik dağılımlar, varyans analizi, bağımsız gruplarda t-testi kullanıldı. BULGULAR: Araştırmada hastaların BUÖ ölçek toplam puan ortalaması 9.57±2.46, SYBDÖ toplam puan ortalaması 130.43±24.73 olarak bulundu. Çalışmada BUÖ ve SYBDÖ ölçek toplam puan arasında negatif yönde ilişki saptandı. Araştırmada aktivite kısıtlanması ile BUÖ ve SYBDÖ toplam puan arasında istatistiksel olarak önemli fark tespit edildi (p<0.05). ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION: Healthy life style behaviors which is seen less frequently in physical illness cause hopelessness in patients. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between healthy life style behaviors and hopelessness in patient with heart failure. METHODS: The patient with heart failure at the Turgut Ozal Medicine Center was the population of the research. 251 patients were formed the sample which determined by the sampling formula from universe and volunteer. Data of the study obtained between October 2015February 2016. The patients were evaluated with Information Form, Beck’s Hopelessness Scale and Healthy Living Style Behaviors Scale II. Percentage, average, variance analysis and independent samples t-test were used in evaluation of data. RESULTS: Total BHS score average of patients was 9.57±2.46 and total HLSB score was 130.43±24.73. It was determined negative side relationship between total BHS and HLSB scores. It was determined statistically significant difference between limitation of physical activity and BHS and HLSB total scores (p<0.05).

The relationship between healthy life style behaviors and hopelessness in patients with heart failure

Purpose The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the loneliness and depression levels of students studying at Inonu University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Departments of Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Audiology and Child Development and the factors that affect these levels. Design and methods This descriptive cross-sectional study which used a socio-demographic information form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory included 1004 students. Findings According to the results of the research, there was a positive relationship between loneliness and depression levels among university students. Class year, family type, place of residence, mother's education level, and economic situation were important indicators of loneliness and depression. Practice implications Psychiatric nurses can help students express their psychological difficulties and help them change their behaviors and lifestyles.

The Relationship Between Treatment Adherence and Social Support in Psychiatric Patients in the East of Turkey

This note is concerned with establishing the existence of solutions to a fractional differential inclusion of a ψ-Caputo-type with a nonlocal integral boundary condition. Using the concept of the endpoint theorem for φ-weak contractive maps, we investigate the existence of solutions to the proposed problem. An example is provided at the end to clarify the theoretical result.
